Please help pick the right class for me
hmmm a good solo pve charcter is warrior, hes melee but also he is good at range with longbow or rifle. if that doesent tickle your fancy it sounds like a ranger might be for you with the added bonus of a pet companion
Tis only what you can do for all
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll try out both.
I wonder if a D/D + Shortbow thief would also fit (with a bit more melee than I’m used to) my tastes….
Thief is a very close quarters class. The shotbow has bugger all range and feels so weak, I don’t even bother with it.
Ranger sounds the best fit. I was lvl 45 before I touched any weapon other than LB and SB, plus your pet can distract enemies for you. LB #5 runs a cripple condition and Hyena pets have a great combo of cripple and calling ally. Stops your WvWvW enemies running away so quickly.
A Mesmer is also something you can consider especially if you go GS/Staff- long range great evasive and defensive abilities and very survivable.
Mesmer is the most fun class imo- it has an interesting play dynamic and can also give some good support, crowd control.
Be aware though that a Mesmer is a bit of a late bloomer.
Here’s how I like to play:
-mostly solo PvE (I’m not antisocial, just too busy to group at the moment)
-prefer range over melee (but don’t much enjoy kiting, but can if necessary)
-like joining quick WvWvW matches, time permitting, and following the zerg
The Ranger class more than meets all of that criteria. You can solo very easily, traps and pets can tank for you while you attack from range, and they’ve got some decent AoE burst when zerging in WvW. I’d suggest giving the class a look to see if they catch your fancy.
I got bored of mesmer at 40 and deleted it. Maybe I should have carried on.
I just didn’t like the animations or concept of using a weapon as a focus, not a whacking stick!

hehe
honestly Mesmer only gets really good after 40 or so.
As for the animations – they are pretty over the top with the pink butterflies and the levitating- laser shooting GS but that is one of the things I love most about them- they have such style.
Not to everybody’s taste for sure
It is sort of a love hate class.
Awesome tips, all, thanks a ton. I’ll give my ranger another go. I think the problem is, I rolled a Sylavari Ranger…and can’t stand the race! Ugh. Maybe I should reroll a different race to enjoy the profession more.

Because of the personal story, the voice acting, the aesthetics, and the atmosphere of the towns and zones, race selection is almost as important as class selection, in my humble opinion.
I’m not saying you should, as that’s solely up to you to decide, but if you do decide to delete your sylvari, remember to bank his gold and spend his currency on account-bound items (salvage kits, gathering tools, weapon/armor skins for other characters, etc) before sending him into oblivion.
