So what is the point of a bunch of the choices in character creation.

I know that certain ones choose the storyline for you (Humans: how you grew up, Norn:What you fight for, Sylvari: What you dreamed about/time you woke up) But other ones (Humans choosing a diety and regret, Sylvari: The Proverb, Norn: What your totem is) Do they have any significance or are they cosmetic?

Asura: Your college and first creation determine the first sections of your personal story. The advisor you pick will appear throughout the storyline.

Charr: Your legion and sire determine your personal story, your sparring partner is the member of your warband who will be involved in all the quests.

Human: How you were raised and your biggest regret determine the personal story. Which god you follow currently doesn’t have any effect except for changing the priest in your home instance.

Norn: Your most important quality and what you did at the moot determine your personal story. Which spirit you follow only determines which priest is in your home instance.

Sylvari: Your first quest and which teaching is most important determine your personal story. When you woke up only affects how certain sylvari speak to you (if they’re the same cycle or a different one) and which luminary will help you in your personal story.

Some people think the “useless” questions (the ones that just change a minor NPC) will have more impact later on, maybe in an expansion, but no one knows for sure.
