I just bought the game and am waiting for a specific server to reflect a “High” population so that I can select it as my home world. I want to know if I can at least play on a lower population server until that happens.

I’m not interested in guesting to visit another server, I know this will be available later.

I’m not interested in speculation, only if someone knows…for a fact…that you are able to change your home world by deleting all your current characters.

I’ve searched through forums and Google and have been unable to find a 100% factual answer. (i.e. – “I have tried this and it worked for me” or “I have tried this and I still had to pay to switch my home world”)

You do not have to delete characters at all to move servers. I am pretty sure transfers are still free (Unless that has changed since I looked 4 hours ago), and you can transfer to any server you wish. There are lots of high pop servers, especially around this time of day (Unless you are European?) You should have no problem getting a server to show high. If you mean you are waiting for it to not be high so you can get in, I’d say you’ll probably have to wait at least 4 more hours until the mass of players log off. I can say 100% though that you can create characters on whatever world you wish for now, and transfer to another and keep them all.

thanks Sisho, however, I have a specific US server in mind that is currently Full.

I want to start playing but do not want to run the risk of having to pay to switch to the specific server.

I suppose I can select any server for now and just have to transfer to the specific server while the transfers are still free, and following the 1 change every 7 days rule, correct?

Umm that is correct for the future, at the moment however, with transfers still being free, you can change as much as you want from what I’ve seen. If it is a specific server you are waiting to get into, and you have the chance to stay up a bit late, I suggest just trying over and over again a few times first, and if that doesn’t work just try again in about 4-5 hours, which is when you can usually slip into the more populated US servers.

If I find the answer to the original question about if it is possible to transfer for free after deleting all existing characters, I will post an update to this…but it looks like we won’t really know until the free transfers stop…

My EU server goes from High to Full to High again from time to time, probably depending on prime time. You could check your server status either early in the morning if you live on the East coast and got up earlier than most of the US, or late at night if you live on the West coast and most of the US (should’ve gone) went to sleep. Chances are, you’ll find a good time to set on that server.

Currently running into this problem with my brother. He put off buying GW2 for weeks while we watched the server capacity remain at full and was waiting for a spot to open, and it never did. I currently have 3 other cousins wanting to buy the game to play with the wife and I as well as him when he gets over to our server, but they refuse to pay for the game if they can’t play with us and it’s not helping we can’t link up with my brother, mush less the other 3 family members. Free transfers do little good when there is nowhere to really transfer to.

yea, I feel you…for the time being, I’ve created a character on another server and have been checking the population…but I checked several times between 7pm to 6am and it was still Full…

one thing I’ve found is that you can add any friends across servers and chat/party with them.

From what I’ve read, the server transfers are free right now because Anet is trying to implement a guesting feature so that you and your friends can play together on the same server. Afaik, once the guesting feature is up and working correctly, that’s when the server transfer will stop being free.

Anet has also stated that they will give plenty of notice to players as to the date/time when the free server transfers will stop.
