Q:

Is it ‘okay’ to wear and use only items you pick up/acquire and never have to bother with buying or making ‘better’ armor or weapons? And by ‘okay’ I mean can I finish the game solo this casually? It would be very nice to play this way. If I actually learn how to use my thieving skills I would of course pinch something important I find. (How can this sort of player end up saving the GW2 world? )

yeah you can finsh the game, like the personal story and that with gear solely picked up and awarded to you. technically you can do any activity you want ingame just with what u find..

Tis not what they can do for you
Tis only what you can do for all

With a little luck you can. The problem comes to if you are unlucky. I just hit 50 and I have not had a good lvl 45+ heavy armor drop for me in the past 5 levels. I have now ‘outgrown’ my armor and hits I take are starting to sting more. I have to make a choice now, farm around until I get that better armor, craft it, or head to the TP and buy some.

Also karma vendors supply weapons armour and trinkets so u can buy stuff there with the rewards you get from events. usually the event guy and quest guy will turn into a vendor like this after you finish there quest and/or event.

Since everyone prices their stuff way too low on the TP, I usually buy some random green/gold armor from it for nearly nothing. As Jezath said, you can get karma stuff as well, although I’d advice against buying too much karma gear, since you’ll need all the karma you can get when you start farming karma for a lvl 80 exotic armor piece.

Oh and for the record, you can’t steal anything equippable with thieving skills. Only one-use items (that don’t end up in your inventory but on your skillbar).
