If it’s a HoT legendary, afaik those don’t drop from the forge – so that’s all about the collection.

Otherwise – you need to make a decision – do you:
1) have the gold, and want the legendary: buy it
2) not have the gold, and are fine losing all your gold: try to forge it
3) not have the gold, and not fine losing your gold:
3a) farm to get the gold, then do #1
3b) do the collection to get the precursor (but use tools like the gw2 wiki and gw2efficiency to determine if it’s actually cheaper to go through that process rather than simply sell the mats and buy outright).

If you don’t have the gold, the legendary journey may be a good focus/distraction while working towards getting your precursor, but doing that journey won’t be anywhere near the most gold-per-hour you can put your time into – though, hopefully, it will be a fun process – which is apparently the point of the game, someone once explained to me, many farms ago.

Buying it straight up is probably the way to go. Alternatively, there are collections you can do that let you craft it.

Check out GW2BLTC.

The site suggests it will cost you ~100g more to buy the precursor over crafting it so you wouldn’t be saving a whole lot.

Using the Mystic Toilet is like gambling, due to RNG. The law of averages suggest that one “should” eventually get a drop. However, it ain’t necessarily so. If you get the drop by expending less gold on rare GS’s than you would by just buying Dawn, you win! The drawback is that you could spend as much on rares as you would on a straight buy, be unlucky, and still be no closer to getting it than when you started.

I lost an obscene amount of gold trying to forge my Dusk ….. I gave up and bought it. While the forge has worked for a lot of people I know it didnt work for me. Do you like to gamble? ^.^

Forging for a specific Precursor is a BAD idea. It’s about luck, which means you could spend several TIMES more than if you had just bought it outright.

Crafting a Precursor allows you to slowly make progress on it while saving a lot of gold (unless you impatiently decide to buy the crafting materials, in which case it can often cost you more than if you just buy the finished Precursor).

Buying a Precursor is the fastest and usually cheapest route, if you have the cash on hand to do it.

As other people have said you should only use the Forge if you’re ok with putting all your gold into it and ending up with nothing.

If you want to make sure you get the precursor you’re better off either buying it from the TP or crafting it through the HoT collection.

What everyone else said. If you can afford to gamble and potentially end up with nothing, then give the forge a go. You might get lucky and get it on your first forge, or you might go through 100 forges without getting one.

If gambling isn’t your thing, then saving up the gold to buy it would be your better bet. Or crafting the precursor (which will still be costly).

I would sayingcrafting no matter the cost, but that’s because I quite enjoy working for it myself plus you would have a quest to follow rather than straightout buying it which to me feels cheap no matter what. (Though i must say i still regret not buying Storm for 80 gold when I was debating it) xD

I bought one precursor before crafting was an option and recently finished crafting a second. I definitely found crafting it more fun and less stressful, and it was actually quicker too (5 months vs. 7 to save gold).

But I know not everyone likes that option, and of course people who don’t have HoT or haven’t got enough mastery points don’t have that option.

I rolled for dawn in the MF 2ish year ago… It costed me nearly 1k in exotics but I pulled Dusk out of the toilet… Sold it for 1.2k (I lost 15% of that to tp fees)… I then bought Dawn with what was left over…

The thing is though.. It could have taken loads more exotics to get it, or even loads less… It’s called RNG…

Ignore gw2bltc or any other site and instead ask yourself this question:

Do you care more about saving time and money or do you enjoy being responsible for every step of creating your own weapon, including crafting, traveling Tyria, and taking on specific challenges?

  • If money is your biggest concern, buy the precursor using an aggressive custom offer. One will be sold to you…eventually.
  • If time is your biggest issue, buy the precursor outright (or make a custom offer just below the current sell numbers). For a 10-70% premium, you’ll have the precursor ASAP.
  • If you like being master of your own main-hand (or two-hand or off-hand), then use the collection method.

People who care about time & money nearly always end up being disappointed by the collection method, no matter how much cheaper it is. The nicest comment I’ve seen has been “well, it wasn’t that bad”.

In contrast, people who like collections and/or like making their own stuff almost always like the scavenger hunt method. The worst comment I’ve seen has been, “a few steps were too random” or “too many broken events” (but that’s more about drops rates and bugs than about the overall idea).

In short:

  • Buy if you care about time/money.
  • Collect, if you’re in in rush to finish.

Buy it. Never think about forging a precursor unless you have thousands of gold. Its to random to reliable MF a precursor (under a 1% chance forge). The expansions precursor crafting is best if you want to slowly make progress on a precursor.

I wouldn’t say ignore the sites that have the calculations. I’d definitely use it to see which is cheaper and which is more expensive at the moment. I wouldn’t use it as the end all be all to decide whether to craft or to buy, however.

But how much one is vs the other should definitely be looked at before a player decides if money is an object to the player at all.
