Q:
Precursor recovery w/ transmutation splitter?
A:
From the patch notes:
Transmutation Splitters will return the two current source items from any transmuted item and will also return an applied upgrade separately.
The source items are the item the skin came from and the item the stats came from. You can only have two source items making up a transmuted item at any time.
Say AB is a transmuted item, with A representing the skin item and B representing the stat item. If you transmute AB and another item C together, you have two options:
-If you transmute C’s skin onto AB, you gain CB, an item with the skin of C and the stats of B. Splitting CB returns C and B.
-If you transmute C’s stats onto AB, you gain AC, an item with the skin of A and the stats of B. Splitting AC returns A and C.
Logic and the specific use of the words “two” and “current” in the description pretty much says it should function this way. That being said, I recommended sticking the precursor in your bank because it’s all too easy to click the wrong items when transmuting, or accidentally salvage/destroy it, or what have you.

I’ve not tried to use a splitter but I think if you transmute it once then again on something else you might have problems. As for working off a first transmute I’m not sure as I have not used one. Personally with something of that value I wouldn’t risk it because if it goofs up or you click a wrong button you will be SOL.
As cool as the Chaos Gun is, I’d really recommend just sticking it in a very, very safe spot in your bank until you can make Quip.

The answer is that I think it would. I think I know how the transmuatation process works and also how the splitter works. So IF my analysis is right it should be ok. Having said that I would highly recommend to not try it!! I think I know, but I’m not sure. If you want to dedicate your hard work to science please do so. But make sure you tape it all and publish every step here so all future generations know its ok. If you don’t want to take the risk then dont take it.

I think instead of an individual taking such a risk, ArenaNet should inform us about the transmutation splitter properly, if anything it will just promote it’s marketing and use.
