So, I just started (first time in GW2).
Sylvari Mesmer (not the issue).

I just hit level 10, and I feel like I am ‘selling myself short’.

I have been holding onto Karma …in-case I need it for something much better later on…

I have been holding on to every blue item I get…..in-case I can “salvage(?)” it later?

I haven’t been buying anything. New weapons or armour. Just what I pick up.

I haven’t been using any socket-items either…again..in-case.

Have no idea where a bank is to store anything.

Suffering the ‘new-player-overwhelmed debuff atm’

Ack. If you had been in game, I would have whispered you.

You will get a salvaging kit as a leveling reward very soon. But you can also buy one from any regular merchant (the guys with a stack of coins over their heads).

What you pick up and get as rewards will take you far. There is rarely actual need to buy things until lvl 80.

What is a socket item?

Bank is in every capital city and at lvl 10 you can go there. In fact, the personal story will take lead you there. Banks have a coin bag symbol on the map. All crafting stations are banks as well. (I hope you know ‘deposit all materials’?)

This is a good idea as you can get some stuff for high level crafting for karma later on.

If you stroll into the Grove you can purchase salvage kits from the vendors there. Salvaging is good as you will get crafting materials you need. As an additional note there is an option in the cog to the top right of the inventory panel called “Deposit all collectibles” this will automatically deposit crafting materials into you bank.

I haven’t been buying anything. New weapons or armour. Just what I pick up.

Yeah I always advise to level off drops and save money for stuff you may need later on.

I haven’t been using any socket-items either…again..in-case.

By socket items I guess you’re talking about runes, sigils and jewels? If you pick up one that you like you can just add them to your gear (assuming it’s the appropriate level). If you have enough of the same rune you get all the bonuses for that level (so at level 10 you need to of the minor runes to get the full benefits for that rune).

As I mentioned above you have the “deposit all collectibles” otherwise banks can be accessed from any crafting station or from the Banker NPC’s. Banker NPC’s are located in all the major cities and every starter zone.

About the “socket” items: At your level they are dirt cheap on the TP. Like, 19 copper for one. Nor are they at all necessary to succeed in combat, though they can give you a little boost. Go ahead and shove them into gear.

Karma you likely should hold onto, though eventually you’ll have tons of it. There are some nice things you may want at level 80 that are 42K karma each, plus in HoT apparently a number of things from the past will be reintroduced (recipes, eg) and they may cost karma. Karma-bought gear from vendors can be better than what you find in drops, but usually you can get better stats for your level via the TP.

Oh, the “TP” is the Trading Post, akin to Auction Houses in other games. You can access it anywhere in the world to sell items (watch out for the listing fee and sales tax, if those combined will take your sale under vendor value, don’t list). You can only pick up bought items at Trading Post NPCs, marked by a round gold icon with a scales in it. I prefer to buy gear for an alt I’m leveling every ten levels or so, filling in with any upgrades worth it beyond what’s dropped during the ten levels. Blues and greens are fine for leveling, though as I get higher (say, 50/60/70) I start buying yellows for the items I use the most, and at 80 I go for oranges.

I did pretty much the same when I started and I didn’t regret it.

I was glad I saved karma especially because then when I got to level 80 I had enough to immediately buy a full set of exotic equipment (which was the best available at the time and still is the best you can buy directly).

Although for future reference only hold on to equipment if you’re reasonably sure you will need it later and you know it will be hard/expensive to replace or you’re not sure (and if you’re not sure it’s always good to ask). Most of the equipment in the game, including a lot of high tier level 80 stuff, can be obtained cheaply and easily, so there’s no need to hang on to equipment just in case you might one day have a use for it unless it’s something special like an ascended (top tier) equipment box.
