Q:

Okay, so, I’m struggling with a weird problem that honestly speaks to the game’s diversity more than anything else. That problem being, naturally, that I have no idea what to do with any game session, so I end up screwing around in the Silverwastes with my HoTed Level 80-ed alt Guardian and then quitting after 15 minutes to go chatroom roleplay on MSPARP or whatever.

I really only have so much time and there’s a lot that one can do in this game. How do you guys go about prioritizing, or quickly deciding what to go about doing? I know this question probably sounds darn stupid and all. If it helps, other than the 80 Alt Guardian I have a mid-twenties Thief and a Warrior at level 9 or so.

This is a really deep game, and I’m hitting that as an issue, weirdly.

If you’ve only insta-boosted a character to L80, I would naturally level another character and complete the Personal Story. Then, either purchase Living World Season Two and play through that (or skip it and jump ahead to HoT), finish the HoT Story, and then purchase (if necessary) Living World Season 3 Episodes and play through those to prepare for the next expansion Story.

I usually do some of the myriad Dailies offered, and work on Episode Achievement completions.

Good luck.

I don’t really think about it to be honest. I usually remember what I’ve been working on and what’s on my ‘to-do list’ so when I log in I just pick whatever I feel like doing at the time.

One thing to bear in mind is that a lot of activities in this game don’t need to be done all in one go and others can be quite quick – for example whilst you have to complete a story instance for your progress to be saved a lot of the instances only take 10 minutes or so (and that’s allowing time to listed to all the dialogue, speak to NPCs, read options etc. – not rushing through it). So it doesn’t matter if you don’t have time to complete it all, you can do a bit and then come back to it later.

I rarely get more than an hour or two and often have no idea how long I’ll have before I’m interrupted, but that’s one of the things I like about GW2. Of course I won’t commit to a dungeon run or whatever if I’m not sure I’ll have time, but there’s a lot of stuff you can do, or at least make progress towards in a short time.

If you allow all there is to do in a game like Guild Wars 2 you will be overwhelmed, it’s happened to a lot of gamers, and myself included.

What I can recommend you do is find a class that really speaks to you, and makes you feel, “This is the one”. Level it up and experiment with build and gear choices, to see which one feels most enjoyable when playing it. Take one thing at a time, play sPvP for a week, then PvE (Fractals/Raids/Dungeons ect.) for a week, then WvW for a week, really try to absorb what is going on, after that, whichever one felt like, “Hey this is pretty cool, I like it”. Play it for a while, and remember there is no problem with changing gears every now and again, to keep things fresh for yourself.

If it helps for something physical, write a list down, after reading up on and watching videos on things in GW2, that way you can treat it as a check list, and as you complete it, you can move onto other things. (I have anxiety problems, so making lists of things I want to get done, makes it a lot more manageable and less, “Stressful”.)

Good luck with what you decide, and remember have fun.

I understand how the OP feels, I also have limited play time and find tyria to be vast. I tend plan what I am going to do before I log on, based on how much time I have and how tired I am.

If I have a fair bit of time and I am not too tired I will play a story episode or do a world boss (there are some level 15 bosses you could try with your level 20). If I’m tired I will focus non-killing tasks like Vistas, POI or a collection. One day I’ll get all of those cats.

If I don’t have much time I will pick an area to roam around in. If I am tired I stick with the core areas, if I have a bit of engergy I will go into HoT or season 3 areas. Then I just roam around killing things, looking for random events and getting a little xp, but no real goal.

Over time things will start coming together and you’ll find it easier to plan your time in game.

definitely play through the main story > season2 > HoT. The story is great so far. In fact one of the best for an mmo out there.
Tbh the rest of the stuff is depending on how tryhard you want to achieve. Full end game gear? Raids. Just interesting in killing other players? sPvP/ WvW. Personally I hate unlocking 100% achievements etc in the games I play and I can just spend my entire free day purely wvw-ing without even bothering with legendaries/raids. You have to figure out what interest you in this game first. I’ve seen people committed to roleplaying in this age which is pretty rare nowadays.

Daily T4 Fractals for free ascended gear and 10-20g and upwards, I also do the recommended ones. I then do the daily achievements in either wvw/spvp.

I also buy the 30 fractal keys daily so if I have time I will farm fractal 40 in a min/maxed group to get encryptions to use the keys which gets me something like 100g+ a week and is my main source of gold (and the best source of gold in the game btw).

Absolutely finish sPVP rewards on season for free ascended gear and trinkets and will farm sPVP for fun and free exotic gear and tomes of knowledge so I never have to level my alts, also good to do some WvW off season if you ever want to get runes of leadership and cheaper cultural armour e.t.c.

Then if I have time and fancy it I will do some HoT, getting any remaining alts through hero points (I have every class) and if I am prepared to be bored I will farm mastery points (boring)

Raids is next on my list, getting a couple chars finished at the moment.

Outside of this if I want to farm gold (which I dont, your better off getting a part time job and converting gems) I will farm 40 and sell encryptions. If I just want to have fun I will do spvp, learning different classes or I will do frontline wvw on my daredevil.
