I haven’t been playing GW2 for long as the title indicates, but I’m having trouble getting past the first few levels of the game. At the moment my highest level character is a level 11 Charr thief. I’m not exactly sure what to do when I play GW2. So far it feels like I’m grinding out maps. I run from one map icon to the next, with a few personal quests in between. That’s my experience so far with the game. When I run into a big boss event or some skill challenges that produce a boss I cannot do them because there aren’t any other players around me.
Is there anything else you can do in the early levels?
Also I am always a level behind the hearts I am running to and my gear always feels outdated.
Just not sure how to progress through this game overall. Any tips would be nice

What is a crowd server? Don’t you just choose a world for your account?

@ITC,

What server are you on. You may just be on a lower population server or your playing times isn’t when a lot of people are on. One thing you can do is guest to a higher population server while your leveling. This will help in having more players in the zones that might be able to help you.

I also have ran into the same problems you have about getting done with things faster then my level goes up. What I started doing was using all five starter areas at once. This allowed me to stay in level appropriate areas and it also helped me fight different enemies and learn different things about my class. Another good thing to do is find a good guild. It doesn’t matter if it is a small guild or large guild. All that matters is they are active and willing to help. The guild I am in loves working on lower level toons and some days we just group up running around leveling together.

Hope some of this has helped you.

Hmmmm. Don’t go from heart to heart so much. Those were added in the beta because people didn’t know how to play the game and to let you see what areas are level appropriate. The real meat of this game are the events. What you can do instead is roam around. If an NPC comes running up to you, they usually have an event they want you to do. Talk to other NPCs that are standing around, especially if they have a name. You can trigger events that way. Get harvesting tools if you don’t have them and harvest everything. Not only are they a good source of money when you sell the mats on the trading post but you get exp from harvesting also. If you are having trouble soloing, see if you can team up with a guild mate or friend.

Also, after you do an event, hang around a few minutes. It’s not unusual for one event to chain into a following event. If you leave you will miss it. You don’t have to stick to your racial area. You can go to Lions Arch (LA) and then thru a portal to another starter area. Also, you may want to fully discover the 5 major cities. This gives a lot of exp and the levels it gives you will make the zones easier to do.

The UI will let you know if there are nearby events. They also will be shown on the map by on orange circle or you may see an NPC with an orange emblem over his head. Those are event areas and NPCs.

Watch map and area chat. Events may be called out on them or people will ask for help in doing events. If they ping the waypoint in chat for you and you have It, you can travel to them. If you don’t have it and its not too far you can run to them. If a skill point or event has a boss that’s too hard you can try asking for help in chat.

Jumping puzzles, most will probably be out of your range, which is a good thing: you can explore the regions till you find the puzzle. Good loot, and time consuming.

Another which I hit at above is exploration, which gives exp, with everything else.

Find yourself a big group event, like dragons or champions.

There’s two apps for jumping puzzles and large event timers you can download on your phone to keep track of as well. (“guild wars jumping puzzle” and “guild wars temple dragon timer”)

@Hjorje
I am on Sea of Sorrows. How do you guest to higher population servers, and how do you get to the other starting areas or lions arch? I just assumed I was stuck in my opening map until I finished it or something

To go to LA, you look at your UI. Crossed swords will be on the top left. Click on that. Select go to the mists. This will take you to the PvP training area the first time you do it and the PvP lobby afterwards. From the PvP training area, head north to a broken looking staircase. Go up. There’s a portal up there. Go through. This will take you to the PvP lobby where you will arrive each time you go to the mists from now on. Go thru the portal directly in front of you. That will get you to LA. You will arrive right by the portals to WvW.

From there you can look at your map and see the central hub (5 pink swirls near each other on the map). Those are the portals to all the starting cities, including your own. There are other, single portals on the map but they lead to other places. From there, each city has other portals. One of which will be that areas starting zone. You can ask in map chat for someone to ping the nearest waypoint to that portal if you are having trouble finding it.

To guest, go to the character select screen. Bottom left is world selection. Click on that. Click on a world you would like to guest to. Click on guest bottom right of panel. A confirmation screen will come up. Hit guest. Then hit play. To leave a server, just go back to the character select screen and you should be back in your home server. You can guest to 2 separate servers as much as you like during a 24 hour period.
