I am having so much trouble finding a profession that clicks.

I leveled a thief to 80, a ranger to 80, a warrior that is up there, a 30s engie, and a 30s ele.

I am starting to wonder if this game is for me. I love the idea behind it but I am just struggling to find that one profession I want to sink all of my days into.

I was hoping Ranger would be it, but since that profession seems to get shafted constantly, I tried thief. Thief was fun, but I cannot really get behind it. I love D/D backstabbing but I feel just beyond paper thin even when I trait toughness.

I would play Ranger if I could stow the stupid pet and use a longbow as primary damage.

Along the same vein of thought, I was thinking maybe a rifle warrior was my play style. I fell in love with killshot. It just doesn’t seem all that viable in dungeons though.

I think I just felt a vein in my head snap from trying to figure out the pros and cons.

If any of you guys are military maybe you can help me out with a CARVER Matrix.

If anyone needs me, I will be in the psych ward.

I note you haven’t tried Mesmer. That and Guardian have been my most fun in PvE.

Guardians and Warriors are the do anything classes. Warriors are more versatile and a lot faster but some find too straight forward. Mesmer sort of sucks until level 80 and even then I only find it fun in WvW.

If you like ranged classes, the elementalist might be the right choice. Bow warriors in PvE are pretty effective as well.

I tried an ele, but I hated the play style a lot. I will keep messing around!

I hated Engineer, yet I tried it on four separate occasions, none of them made it over 40, when I finally hit gold it was a D/D elementalist build, it gave me just enough of a bursty feel with self sustained healing and mild survivability I was hooked.

Right now I’m a pure DPS glass cannon at 80 now helping my friends out with events/dungeons/story with rare quality gear and I love it as a D/D or Staff depending on need of damage or support.

I can only recommend the most fun I had in GW2 was as a D/D elementalist or a Greatsword/1H-Shield warrior.

The biggest problem I have with en Ele is having to switch “stance dance” with your elements.

I would love to play one… but.. eh….

have you tried Necro?
For the longest time I didn’t even consider Necro because I hate the minions and I didn’t find the whole look pleasing at all.

then I made a well based Necro.
She probably made it to 80 fastest of all my characters and she is a hoot to play.

Don’t worry too much if you cannot find only one profession.
I have 5 80’s and I play all of them equally.
It is much more important that you enjoy yourself- by all means mix it up, keeps things interesting

If you want to play all different types of content with the same skill bar, you will be disappointed. Each profession has different weapon choices that are more appropriate for certain situations than for others.

If you say a rifle warrior is fun, but not in dungeons, equip a different weapon in dungeons. If you say a dagger/dagger thief is fun, but not if enemies can fight back before they die, equip a different weapon (and a different playstyle) for those occasions (e.g. stealth instead of gap closers).

You can (and should) also adjust your utility skills and major traits freely between situations. Only reassigning your trait points actually has a cost.

Skathe you could try the Meta Staff Ele. I say that because you seem to love range attack (Ranger Longow, Warrior Rifle). Those two are bad, but the Staff Ele is one of the best range DPS. Also the Meta Staff need you to stay in Fire most of the time, which would be good for you since you say that you hate switching attunement.

The build is 30/10/10/10/10 or 30/20/10/10/0. Usually it come with full Zerker gear, but you can trow some knight armor or Valkyrie trinkets if you want a bit more defense.

You should probably specify what areas of the game you intend to play as some classes work better for some areas than others.

For example, for open world PvE, the Ranger does really well thanks to his dumb pocket tank.

I did not enjoy thief as much as other proffs and it took a while to find a play-style that was comfortable, I still play it on a regular basis. Necro went from a blah feeling to this is amazing when I ditched the minions completely, I play mostly scepter/dagger and love it. If the axe skills had a slightly greater range I would play that instead of scepter.
Each one of my characters I have found weak in some areas and really strong and or fun in others. Group I would go ele with staff, solo my hunter or mesmer. The rest I rotate through just to keep things interesting.
It is annoying as all heck to hear you need to make up your own mind but it is true.

I alternate between ele and warrior. Imo warrior is more ‘general purpose’ and when it comes to dungeons I use mine for some of the ‘tougher’ content like TA, Arah, etc. Ele is much better in almost all aspects of the game (better might/fury stacking, better partywide boons i.e. swiftness/regen/heals, better dps when stacked in corner, better overall dps, etc etc.) however one thing they are sorely lacking is survivability. Warriors have one of the highest health pool and good burst damage, and are more useful for dungeons like CoF, TA, etc. For weapons on ele, while you don’t have as many weapon choices as a warrior does, with the attunements and way their skills work.. you honestly feel like you have more choice, plus their weapon skills are more fun and diverse. Staff to me feels too blocky, you are basically stuck in one spot channeling fire spells unless you need to switch attunes for support. I tend to use either S/X or D/X and between those two I feel its more variety than the entire skillset of warriors.

I should add…

I love to play hit and run classes. In DND, I am always the scout, rogue, thief, ranger, etc.

I would fall in love with the ranger if I could ditch the stupid clunky pet and the longbow was actually good. Oh, their utilities are lack luster.

I will give necro a shot. Staves look pretty neat. Their utilities dont look that great either.

MMM hit and run?

I know you have not really played Engi much but one of my Engi’s, I play as what I can only describe as, hit, run and troll.
She uses dual pistols/flame thrower/elixer gun

My Necro is sort of dash and dodge- I play her without minions- Axe/Warhorn, Scepter Dagger- with wells as utilities, traited to ground target.
I actually find her utilities awesome.
She is very much a skirmisher type character for me

My Ranger is not a hit and run type at all.
But if you want fairly mobile pets try Raven/ Hawk- I have never had any trouble with them at all.
my Ranger is an actual Archer type so I play her with LB/SB

I’ve begun to fall in love with my thief. P/D seems to be my play style. I just hope rangers get some love in the future.
