Q:

I’ve been playing for about a month now, and just can’t settle on a profession I really want to level, pvp/wvw/dungeon, and just generally be a total completionist on (which is what I usually do once I hit endgame on my chosen class in a game—do everything I can).

My first few weeks playing, I got a guardian to 48, and I guess just got bored. Then I powered through leveling an Elementalist to 80 when I had a couple days off work, and after some dungeons and WvW, find I just don’t really enjoy it. Since then, I’ve made many characters that haven’t gotten past 20—Ranger, Mesmer, and Thief.

I just… can’t decide what is worth taking to 80 and further. I’m starting to stray away from melee, seeing how dungeons punish the ones who aren’t at the top of their game avoiding the bad, despite how much I used to love shield-and-hammer type tanky classes in other games.
Plus I don’t think I could play melee very well in wvw, since anytime there is a zerg around most of the players don’t even load before I’m dead. Ranger was fun until I realized how much micromanagement it’d take to keep a pet alive and useful. Thief was interesting, though seems very quick to die, until I made the mistake of reading the forums. I guess I kinda lose interest in playing a class everyone calls OP.

Anyways I guess the question is… how did you pick your favorite/main profession? Why? And do you have any tips for someone who has run out of character slots to try new professions and feels bad deleting characters constantly to try and retry?

Hey Kae and welcome to the game

I’m an Altaholic and been doing something similar (though none of mine have reached 80 yet) ..

I have a range (50), Engineer (42), Guardian (39) and Elementalist (18) atm as my “Mains” with a Necro & Mesmer waiting in the wings ready to try out.

You could always buy an extra character slot off the gem store – they’re not very cheap but worth it for the fun and convenience of another character.

I’m loving the Guardian now and like it’s playstyle and survival though not run any dungeons yet…

Necro’s also seem to be quite fun and have more range options as does the Mesmer .. or continue your Elementalist with different weapons & build to see how that fits you?

Finally, Ranger could suit you nicely and I have fun on my ranger but in dungeons people seem to select pets with ranged attacks (Spiders etc) or those that buff characters and put them on passive so they stay with you so you don’t need to worry about their survival so much.

Character choice is such a personal thing it’s so hard to offer best advice to someone else but I do suggest keep trying out all the different weapon combos and builds as these really seem to change how a profession plays and what they can do.

Hope that helps and congrats on your 80
