Duke Vindictae (80 Chronomancer)
Pain is temporary, Regret is forever.
Hi, ive just gotten back to gw2 and have gotten through most of HoT, and now i’m trying to gear for endgame fractals/raids.
I’ve never done above lvl 50 in fractals and haven’t gotten a chance to try the Raid yet so i’m unsure of the playstyle needs in those areas.
I’m between my Chrono or my Tempest i use both for my main but gearing both would be time consuming.
So i’m just looking for yalls experience/opinions on the two so i can weigh out my decision!
Thanks in advance,
Ascended gear is account bound and they’re both light armor, so you don’t actually need to choose.
So just keep a bunch of tomes on hand and hope i always need the same stats., ?
If you PUG raids, you’ll find that tempest is more in demand. Tempest is considered to have among the best damage and utility in the game; chrono has middling damage and niche utility (it’s very useful for specific situations).
I don’t PUG much and I find chrono more fun to play, so that’s what I tend to stick with, between the two you named.

Both use berserker for their high end stuff. Some professions don’t at this point, but luckily for you these two use the same stats.
Getting to level 80 is completely trivial. If you really don’t want to level, you can use tomes and what not like you mentioned. After that, it’s just having enough bank slots open to swap their gear.
For a budget situation you can craft a single set of Berserker’s + Scholars, and you’ll be okay in Fractals on both classes.
In both Raids and Fractals Tempests are favored for their very high damage out put. So Berserker’s is the ideal way to go for that role. Tempests can also play the role of Healer in Raids, but the gear selection from that varies from Berserker to Zealot’s/Mahi depending on how much babysitting you need to do for your team.
Chrono’s act primarily as a buffbot in both Raids in Fractals. In Fractals, Chrono’s have a “Swiss Army Knife” capability in that they can mimic various utilities that other classes have (Stealth, condi cleanse, boon distribution, etc). Given how their damage is distributed (self + Phantasms) and the fact that they excel as Reflects Chrono’s benefit more from an Assassin/Berserker’s mix. Though, the difference may be barely noticeable unless you got a DPS of sort over traditional Berserker’s.
In Raids, Chrono’s can fill the Tank role in the first two boss encounters. The gear selection for this is a mix of Assassin’s/Berserker’s/Knight’s for a budget solution, but the slightly more effective gearset is a Commander’s/Berserker’s mix.
Personally, I prefer Chrono over Tempest just because I find it amusing to be able to completely shutdown the mechanics of fractal islands like Cliffside and Uncategorized with shenanigans. Though for Raids I would say Tempest is easier to play and more in demand since a team can make use of several Tempests vs Chrono’s only get 1 spot.
i have 7 80s fully geared in exotics, was a bit of an altaholic on the way to endgame.
My biggest problem i guess is survivability, i get going full zerk for Tempest and other power builds but i like utility/support over just pure dps.
And i see alot of people saying Staff Ele/Temp is best support/dps for raids, but i just dont feel it personally, they do give out stacks of might well and has some heals but it seems like a mainly DPS oriented class.
Which is why ive been leaning Chrono/mes..
Thats why i am/was looking for the experienced endgame pros/cons for the 2 at max gear, ive played every proffesion up to 80 once atleast.
Staff Tempest is very much damage orientated. They can swap to water for some heals and water field (more heals), but it’s quite a bit of loss in damage since you’re locked out of your damaging attunements (primarily fire, less so Air) until they come off CD. They do provide Might through Fire OL, but it’s more for top off purposes rather than sustaine purposes since PS Berserkers and Heralds do that more easily and frequently.
D/W I would argue has more support capabilities. The Fresh Air traits offsets typical punishment of swapping out of a damaging attunement since you can near instantly swap back. This allows more freedom for swapping to Fire for burst damage skills and Heat Sync for boon uptime. You can also swap to Water for burst heals and Earth for a small spike of Protection. Nonetheless though, a squad is bring a Tempest (regardless of weapon preference) because they want damage, not support.
Chronomancer shares the same fate as they are generally brought for one primary purpose: buffing. So whether you’re tanking or just there for utility, you are brought along as a Chrono because of Alacrity and Quickness. If you’re tanking you still have to provide buffs but are instead actively blocking/evading rather than just AA-ing while your buff skills are on CD.
The downside to Chrono is that if you mess up your buffing rotation your team suffers a considerable amount in damage output. Chrono’s in this case are not brought along for their own personal damage output but rather by how much they can augment the damage output of others. The other downside being the potential cost involved with the build depending on how much you want to spend. E.G. a Concentration Sigil alone cost about 123g to craft by hand on top of the time/money required to obtain Commander gear. Again, there are budget options that may but may not perform as efficiently.
