PvP/Gear.
WvW is a PvP/PvE hybrid. This means it uses elements of PvE and elements of PvP
In sPvP you get special gear you can get for 100% free. In WvW you use your PvE gear. You are upgraded when you are below level, butthat only counts for the stats and tratis and skills you have equipped.
So for example.
You are level 37 and bring a level 35 rare weapon. This means this gets upgraded to a level 78 (two levels below 80) rare weapon. People who are 80, have access to level 80 exotic or ascended gear.
Furthermore, those people at level 80 have full access to all the traits and skills while you are still in the process of unlocking them.
Bottom line: yes you stats are increased, but you dont have the full potential of a level 80. You can level in WvW, but it is advisable to hide in the zerg.

I read somewhere that Glory can buy me substantial gear for WvW? I did a solo arena queue and got 150 glory but I also read I cannot level up through solo arena.

No you cant use glory to buy WvW gear. You can use glory to buy (mostly) PvP-related items like specific skins.
Doing sPvP like solo arena you don’t gain experience as you do in PvE and WvW. you can however use the glory to buy Tome’s of Knowledge. These cost 20s and 1500 glory each and will give you one level.
So for 78 levels (You’ll be level 2 anyways due to the tutorial when you make a new character), you need 117000 glory and 15g60s.
PvP is armorwise and levelwise totally different from WvW and PvE

Think of PvP as a completely separate game from everything else. Gear, skills, xp and traits all do not carry over. Skill characteristics and such are also sometimes different.
I’ve been doing Solo Arena, just so I can learn some basic pvp in this game and get the hang of my ‘profession’. While acquiring some money, I got some reward chests that gave me some items are these of any use in WvW? How should I go about gearing up for WvW as thats more so what I want to be doing.

Those wont do any thing for WvW. Spvp is COMPLETELY separate from ANY other game mode. Anything you earn in spvp cannot be used anywhere else, and anything you earn anywhere else cannot be used in spvp.
To get serious about WvW you first need to be level 80. From there just get exotics/ascended with stats that compliment your build
So anything I get in these chests is basically useless gear wise considering the merchants give me free exotics and runes or whatever anyways. Besides the glory boost? So get to level 80, alright.

Not entirely useless. They’re mostly for looks. You can preview almost all the armor in the game in your pvp locker in the mists. Thatll give you an idea of what some of the higher end chests can have. (All that gear is also obtainable in PVE/WvW)

For you, yes it prolly is useless.
sPvP is a fully competitive kind of gameplay. so for sPvP you can get all gear for free with the best stats. when in sPvP consider your self an olympic sporter where you are provided with equal gear as any opponent. Comming from some other games I can totally udnerstandyour confussion, but pvp is not a gear grind, but fully based on skills.
The chests reward you with skins (so you can show how good your skills are) and more important rank. Rank is important for team arena’s and to get to fight better enemy’s.
But as said, there is absolute no connection to WvW. WvW follows a more traditional geargrind where you can be beter if you farm/grind the better gear. This grind and max gear is a lot easier to obtain then in some other games, but it is still requires effort and time.

Yeah it’s a little confusing, sorry. I’m used to basically either grinding BGs or other various PvP things for gear to PvP or grinding dungeons/raids/world bosses etc for PvE gear. Some games I’ve played where you strictly farm PvE gear for PvP, some are different. So I’m starting to understand now based on what ya’ll are saying, sPvP offers an equal playing field based strictly on skill. For WvW I’ll need to acquire actual gear that I’ll have to grind out, now grinding gear for WvW is where I’m at a loss. Is there a specific type of gear I’m looking at farming? A certain route, such as this gear > then thisgear > this gear > and finally the gear you want? Ty for all the help.

Thats also very different in this game. All exotics of the same prefix will have the exact same stats no matter where i get it from. So say i get a berserker gloves (power precision ferocity) from a dungeon, but i also have one of the same level that i bought from the trading post. There would be absolutely no difference in the stats. They would just have a different look. Same with soldiers (power toughness vitality) or rabid (condition dmg toughness precision) or any other stat prefix.
Because of this and the trait system (top two tiers are offensive, middle two are defensive, and bottom one has something to do with class mechanic ie deathshroud, pets, toolbelt skills, elements, youre f1-f4 abilities.) any profession in the game can do anything. You can build an extremely defensive thief for example, and likewise a very bursty guardian.
If you tell me what profession you rolled i can help you setup a viable build for WvW.
Im running a Thief, currently using a D/D for sPvp. I also have P/D for swap, not used to P/D yet. Running 0/30/30/10/0. I’ve tried various Professions in sPvp just to see kind of how they perform in PvP, although I understand WvW is different. It just gives me an insight on their mechanics and what I can somewhat expect out of them, thief is my fav so far.

Thats good0/30/30/10/0 or 10/30/30/0/0 is the standard backstab build. You get decent survivability from shadow arts, and good dmg from critical strikes.
This link will show you what gear to aim for once you get to 80
The normal leveling weapon for thieves is Sw/p. this is because you can use the #5 ability to blind mobs (they can’t hit you) and autoattack cleave them down. The #3 also evades for the duration. Its pretty easy to level with. P/D is more a DoT weapon, not so great for leveling. Its a very defensive set, and there are some very powerful WvW builds using it, but id stay away for leveling.
Short bow is almost always the swap weapon for thieves, simply because its so versatile. You can spam the #2 for tons of AoE dmg, the #3 is an evade that cripples, the #4 is a long lasting poison field(use it to reduce healing, especially good in pvp), and the #5 is a long teleport incase things get too hairy.

Yeah, I’ve been trying to nail down combos/understanding positioning/my targets etc. Just generally playing around to get a hang of everything, just came from WoW so things are a little different. Been trying Sword/Pistol for a bit of distance and some dazes then swap to my D/D for more all outs. I’ll try using a bow with D/D. Thanks for the help, really appreciate it. I’ll look up how to grab that gear, then get on the ball with levelling here soon.
