Hi,

I am experienced with other pvp mmo games, but I just started GW2.
I am still at a loss and don’t feel comfortable yet with the mechanics, since it’s day 2.
Yesterday I thought I should try a scenario/battleground/arena or how they are called here:))
In the end of the game, I was called a kitten by another player, I was obviously not doing what is expected to be right.
So my question is:
Should I first level my char to 80 before joining pvp games? What’s the best way to learn? Start early and kitten other ppl off by being a beginner? Read forums about how things work? Pve your kitten around till you feel comfortable with mechanics?
My goal is ofc to learn the game and be a good asset of a pvp match, but should I avoid it completely to not harm the outcome of games for ppl who already know what they doing?

You certainly could play some other modes to get the idea of how your character plays. You could also go to the pvp practice areas and work on learning your skills there.

Conversely, you can play in a pvp match anytime you want. Who cares what other people call you or say to you. Don’t get discouraged because other people take a video game so seriously they are on the verge of suicide when they lose a match.

pve levelling will get you used to how your class operates in combat, but even when you put a lot of time into he pve side its a completely different ball game in spvp.

you could just jump in at the deep end and play spvp without touching the pve side at all but it might be easier to do pve until your comfortable with the combat mchanics and then jump in.

that being said, i suck at spvp so i mightn’t have the best opinion lol

DONT QUEUE UP FOR TOURNAMENTS ON DAY TWO!!! If you were just in regular hot joins then that guy was an kitten, but if it was tournaments like i suspect since you mention queue, i completely understand. Get familiar with basic game mechanics, and even then only do hot joins until you have a good understanding of pvp. There arent really arenas in this game, unless you count dueling servers which dont reward you anythin anyway. If you came from WoW, every match is basically arathi basin. You were also probably using some year old cruddy build. Research your class a bit for a good build.

Sorry if i came off rude, just trying to advise you. We were all new once.

No it was not a tournament it was a quick join. Is world vs world open pvp better place to start then?

No WvW isn’t good until youre level 80. Even though you are up leveled, you don’t have all the traits, skills, or stats a real 80 would. My suggestion would be to level a bit until you get a basic understanding of game mechanics and youre class. From then on just do hot joins hot joins hot joins. If someone calls you a kitten in a hot join, theyre the real kitten. When you get bored of spvp, level some more until you hit 80 and then you can WvW. Out of curiosity, what class are you playing, as i can probably help you out a lot with a build. If youve played any other mmos, what classes and play styles have you liked from them?

I play a Mesmer and I think I will stick to it.
In other mmos classes were more specific. I’ve played and enjoyed tank class, heal class and dps. My tank was dps with shield (mix def/off) my heal was defensive/heal spec and my dps were glass cannons.

Mesmer is comparable to a glass canon. Relying on stealth and clones to hide behind while pvping. Keep in mind that Its not an easy class at all. Making a mistake will lead to you dying in most cases. You need to be very clutch to make make sure you dont get hit by big stuff.

Im quite the experienced wow pvp player myself (2.2 – 2.6 on 7 classes) and even i struggled with certain classes. So dont expect instant succes, unless you end up switching to one of the easier classes.

If i had to describe mesmers role in organized play id say its like a rogueish mage. “Hiding in the shadows” and avoiding dmg untill that moment when your team bursts X target down.

They arent super strong atm. But i heard the new patch (10 dec) and nerfs to some of their counterclasses (thieves) will shift the momentum in their favour.

The pvp here is a different feel than most other mmos and takes a bit of practice to get used to. Honestly, the only way to get the hang of it, is to jump right in to hotjoins. You will find people trash talking, regardless of where you start. In fact, every pvp game has these types. Just ignore them or troll them with random stuff that doesn’t make sense to confuse them, which is my personal favorite.

I would hold off on the tournaments for a bit, and practice in 5v5 hotjoins to warm up for them when you do decide you’re interested in them.

Thats the one class i dont play, so i cant really advise to well. But i do know Mesmer is probably one of the, if not THE hardest class to pvp well with. You can go to the Mesmer forum for any questions you have, and i suggest you join the OMFG (Official Mesmer Forum Guild). You can be in several guilds at the same time so thats not an issue.

My main advice would be to roll a warrior until you get a basic understanding of how to pvp in this game. One of the most powerful classes right now, and a low skill cap so you can do well with it at any skill level.

Yes it seems you were right, the first time I joined pvp it was a tournament (without me realizing). Ever since I discovered the game browser and I can practice my Mesmer without getting any dissing etc.
I realized that in the first days the game frustrated me, in a sense that I felt that I can’t master the mechanics for pvp. But I noticed that every day I get better so I think the learning curve is quite good actually.

Mesmer is tough but I think I’m getting better at it concerning avoidance and use of clones so I won’t drop it.

I think the work put into this game is amazing overall.

Do some exploring in the PvE Zones and you will continue to be in awe of the artwork. Been playing since release and I still run into hidden little areas that I have never seen with simply amazing views.

PvE —> Level 30+ —> PvE+WvW —> Level 80 —> sPvP
is probably the best progression for a player with no preference toward PvP vs PvE. Although you WILL be disadvantaged in WvW until you are 80 fully geared.

However if you’re a hardcore PvP in other games and dislike PvE, then theres no reason you should waste the time PvE’ing to level 80 until you actually feel like it. You could PvE to level 20 or 30 to understand the basics of your class before getting into sPvP.

It is recommended that you begin with 5 v 5 hot join for the first 10-20 ranks, this will give you space to try different builds and classes and learn some of the little tricks that people employ on a per map/class basis.

I personally would also jump into solo queue now and then if you feel you are playing well as the MMR (Match making rating) should eventually balance you into a position where you play against equally skilled opponents, if anyone attempts to verbally abuse you for doing so just inform them where the team queue button is and report/block them.
