I replied to a post called “why don’t you like PvP” on the general forum.
My reply was
“Cuz I suck at it..really..I do… I can be overrun by a player controlled Dolyak. "

It made me think and therefore post this request. Which patient soul is willing to guide me throught the concepts of playing PvP?
And I mean:
- Build for guardian (which I am planning to use) and its use
- Strategies
- gear setup
-etc.

I am a active learner (meaning i do not remember theory very well but need to repeat actions myself over and over to learn). Maybe first start with one on one maybe ?

I dont feel reading or watching youtubes are adding to my skills..I prefer learning on the fly..dont bother pointing me into that direction :P

Add me ingame if you are the noble soul up to the challenge

I am on Seafarer’s Rest Server and Europe based

I’m NA so sorry. But I can give you some advice. As a guardian you have two main builds : Bunker and Medi. There is a lot more of them, but these two are the most popular and ’’easier’’ to play.

Bunker is mostly a team role. Its awesome to play with friends, but when you are alone it can be frustrating. Your goal here is to stay alive as much as possible and keep a point (usually the middle point) for as long as possible. You buy your teamates time to get back at mid to help you.

Medi build are the typical roamer/killer build. Its a high risk/high reward kind of build, you are squishy but can kill quickly. I can’t really give you much information about this build as I didn’t play as much Medi as I did as Bunker.

Both of these are more a family of build with different kind of trait and weapons available to fit what playstyle you prefer.

You can explore those two kind of builds on gw2 meta battle and ask more specific question depending on which you would prefer.

I’m sorry to say, but if you like to learn on the fly you’re making it yourself a whole lot harder.

I’m still gonna suggest to get a nice build somewhere, read what the rotation is for the skills and then watch the build in a few plays.

I’m not gonna be the one to teach you if you don’t want to put in some effort yourself – After you’ve read up and got the basics, I’m more then willing to help you in a few games.

I’m medi zerker myself for a while, and I love it!

hahaha you understood me a little wrong. I was suggesting not to ONLY get my learning experience from online media but also to have some fellow players who are willing to coach me during a real PvP round. As said, i am a practical learner.
Right now I am studying this: http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Guardian_-_Altruistic_Healing_Bunker

If I go into an arena with just theory..I get wasted in minus 2,56 seconds I fear :P

AH Bunker is what I play on my guardian since the beginning. Just some starting tip for you.

- The job of a bunker is to keep the middle point hopefully to your team, or at least decap.
- You should never get out of the node except for some very special occasion. When to get out and when to stay in your node will be learn with experience but you should stay the vast majority of time in the node.
- Renewed Focus and Invisibility will stop you from capping or keeping a node. So only use Renewed focus when there is a friend with you in the node, when you are about to die or when there is no enemy with you in the node so you don’t lose it. Think about attacking an enemy to get ride of stealth when a friendly thief or Mesmer stealth you in a wrong moment.
- Your survivability come from mainly 3 things. You need to learn when to you use your damage mitigation (blind, aegis, block, invulnerability, etc) to block burst attack, do not just spam them unless there is a lot of ppl on you and you just try to survive for a couple second. You won’t have that much vitality with the clerics amulet, but you will have a lot of healing. Other than the obvious healing skill you have your F2, your shouts, mace 2, mace 1, focus 4 and staff 2 to heal you. Staff 4 is also a good healing but watch out it roots you in place in a vulnerable situation don’t use it in the middle of a brawl. Finally your dodge will be a big part of your survivability. You gonna need to switch weapons a lot. Not only the sigil of Energy will give you more endurance, the sigil of intelligence will give crit each time you swap to activate Vigorous precision.
- You are the one that survive the most. All stomp inside your node should be your responsibility most of the time. Keep your stability, nothing worth than not stomping someone in a big fight. You can also use F1 to blind a downed person when you stomp.
- Use your line of warding to make ppl waste their stability. I prefer to put the line in the middle of my node and I usually wait until my friend or enemies are half their HP, that way if they waste their stab, they won’t have it back when someone will down on either side.

A

.

Just wanted to add a bit to this part. Bunker guard has to be in the team fights, where he can heal and cleanse allies. For example, if a guard sits on mid point the whole match, and the enemy team ignores middle, the rest of the team will be 4v5 on other nodes, and the guard is pretty much useless just sitting there.

Also, if the mid point is lost, there is no point on going there alone, bunker guardian can’t decap or 1v1 anything, so you have to find where you are needed the most.
I see alot of people making the mistake on going to mid no matter what the situation is. Like thaddeus said, learning how to rotate properly comes with experience.

It’s a bit difficult to play bunker guard at the moment, since there are celestial builds that can bunker a node, have better mobility and can also 1v1, so they mostly replaced bunker guards. But if you enjoy the playstyle, it’s a good place to start learning pvp.
Feel free to add me ingame, i’ll be glad to help if i can when i’m online.

If you are still using the standard keybinds, you’ll be at a disadvantage. You want everything to be in easy reach.

For instance, my mouse has a thumbbutton set to CTRL. Instead of reaching for 6 and 7 etc, I got utilities bound to CTRL+2/3/4, elite to V, Heal to F, and ‘use’ to Z. Similarly class skills are CTRL+Q/E/A/D.

There’s no one true way to set it up, but making it easy on yourself will help a lot. To start, use the second keybind column to set the new binds, and let the old ones alone. If you then hit the old keybind, the power will still fire. It’s a handy backup until muscle memory sets in.
