Q:
Howdy,
I had a quick question about PvP, I am more of a defensive player, but I noticed I do not get many points for guarding a node, so I gave that up and started to follow the zerg, and I noticed if I took part in enough fights even in a losing match I could net around 200 glory, is this intended? It seems the nature of the game (well 8 v 8 ) is simply to zerg? Where exactly does the skill come into play? Granted, 5 v 5’s are different, but I have always found competitive objective based PvP is rather diffacult for a deaf player just due to the nature of objective based PvP in the competitive setting, versus organized groups that utilize vent / mumble etc.
So what is the nature or intent of PvP in GW2, would we be better off if normal matches were also 5 v 5 to support more tactical play? 8 v 8 often times just feels too zergy, and takes away from the wonderful balance / gameplay anet created.

Sad face. . . so I take it zerging is the nature of 8 v 8 and I no one likes the idea of making normal spvp matches also 5 v 5. Hehe just trying to figure out if this is just the new game smell kicking in, and once people get a handle on things it will even out, or is this really the way pvp was meant to be played in GW2.
Capturing objectives increases your score drastically. Not sure what issue is.
You can go in, be full on support/tanky/soaker/heals/whateverelsecleveryouwannacallalitedps spec and capture objectives and profit big time. Killing blows are another method, but you just need to hit f2 for that… there are other random bonuses to your score too.
Killing off (successfully) someone who comes into your objective zone you are protecting will get you good points too… but you cannot control the actions of your enemy… you might potentially be sitting there the whole match doing jack all and then of course you don’t score very high… you may as well have been afk.
That is my problem, getting points while defending is based around “if” they attack your node while you standing there. At the moment 8 v 8 is more or less a back cap race. Sure you get games where both sides play both defensively and offensively, but those are fairly rare in 8 v 8.
I just fail to see how rolling in a zerg for points instead of winning is what Anet had in mind. Maybe instead of making it so normal matches are 5 v 5, they should make it so only the winning team gets glory, this would promote more team play which should create more meaningful matches. I just feel weird calling out inc’s to nodes, or defending a node from the same 2 or 3 people who try to back cap every so often.
The point remains, even if you are losing if you group up and follow the zerg you can end the match with 200+ glory. Which is silly. I gave up playing to win, if I win great, but now in 8 v 8 I just follow the zerg and often time get more glory then the the top player on the winning team.
You could think about it that you arent “defending” the zone if there are no enemies around. Should you really get points for just sitting there doing nothing? Sure you’re helping you team and serving as a lookout, but since numbers make a big difference in PvP, you could be helping your team else where.
The majority of your bonus points in a match comes from winning followed by being top objective defender/taker/neutralizer, etc. I have feeling that if points/glory were to be awarded for “defending” a zone, then teams will just sit and turtle on one spot when they think they cannot win. SW:TOR had this exact issue in their node capture battlegrounds and it made for horrible PvP matches as half of a team wouldnt even try…which meant the other half had to give up as well. It’s sad that most players seek the easy way out and not actual fun in challenges or competion.
Luckily for us, GW2 PvP rewards dont give any advantage in PvP due to everyone being on the same level, so there is no need for players to try amass Glory other than personal preference in appearance.
I’ve had some luck changing which game server I’m in if I find the hot-join sPvP lacking. Each row in the PvP browser is a different server. Once you join one you’ll play game after game after game, mostly with the same people. If you’re just seeing both sizes zerging each game, drop back to the mists, select a different game server from the list, and join. You’ll have a whole new set of players and hopefully, after a couple of tries, you will find a server that is playing with a few more tactics.
Or you could decide that earning the maximum possibly glory per match is not your main goal and just play the way you want to. On my thief I’m always running back and forth between the 2 edge nodes. At the start of the match I run to the other team’s node, hide behind some terrain until they cap it, wait until everyone runs off (because no one wants to defend) and then quickly neturalize and cap their point, boosting my team out to an early lead. I almost always get the Objective Neutralizer bonus points, and often the Point Capture one as well. I may not get as many kills, but I’m helping the team and breaking a few opponents out of the main zerg to come back to get their point back from me.
Is eight players the new definition of “zerg?”
Winning will net you a match bonus and it will also gain you influence if you’re in a guild. It is also possible to actually win and still achieve a large amount of points. You don’t need to camp an empty point for an entire match to win a game. . . Perhaps you need to broaden your playbook.

Yes it is zerg in GW2 PvP… but the 8v8 is for the casuals who don’t care and just want to jump into pvp.. Want 5v5 do free tourneys.

This game period is for casuals.
I understand each of your points, and if I came off saying it is not possible to net a healthy amount of glory even while winning / playing to win, though overall 8 v 8 simply feels like a zerg, and I noticed that some try to carry it over in 5 v 5 free tournaments.
Though each point everyone has made makes sense, and I understand the fears of awarding points for simply defending, currently now the system does not really allow for afking, but if they awarded points, one could afk glory, or may lead to people camping for points.
I enjoy 5 v 5, but sadly all my friends still play WoW for arena, and it is hard to find players that are willing to put in the work / gamble that goes in while gaming with a deaf gamer.
Thanks again.
