Question about combos
Calling it a Combo is a bit misleading. Its more like enchanting.
Some skills create Combo fields that enchant attacks they pass though them or are used in them.
Then Combo finishers are the attacks that will be enchanted. The most common one is projectiles.
So a simple example to understand it is shooting an arrow through a wall of fire will catch the arrow on fire and apply burring to the target.

Important? – Sure.
Does anyone in the game care about it? – NOpe, cuz it’s really hard to constantly combine the right combo fields with combo finishers; you’ll find yourself wasting skills just to get a certain combo off if you purposely try them in fights. Might be use full in larger team-fights but…
Naw. They’re mostly irrelevant.
But if you want to know how they work, just check the link both nigma & amos posted above.

Really? I use ‘em all the time. I drop me some black powder, then shoot through it ta spread the blindness around a bit, an’ if I’m in ah group I always try ta drop it around other ranged fighters. I’ve also seen plenty ah times when ah Elementalist has dropped a fire wall, or whatever it’s called, an’ we’ve gone blastin’ through it ta mess things up. Come ta think about it, I’m always seein’ people throwin’ down walls an’ circles, an’ whatnot … an’ a fair bit of them letcha combo.
I think, if yer not usein’ ‘em, yer makin’ a mistake.
I’m sorry I stepped outta yer box, don’ worry, if
ya whine enough they’ll put me right back.
Good players know how to use and implement them. I would make an effort to practice using them with other classes.
I disagree with the people who don’t care about them. You can seriously buff up your DPS or survival just knowing a couple combos that you can self-inflict.
For example, on rangers the easiest combo in the world is just run with a spider pet. The spider will throw down poison fields which combo with projectiles. Instant DPS boost. Mesmers ability to create fields that combo into confusion can seriously mess with enemies. as confusion is bad nasty (and freakin’ OP in sPvP…jus’ sayin’…either quit fighting which is bad or take lots of damage which is bad…you have no good choice). Thieves can create lifesteal pools. Rangers, again, can create regen pools.
The list goes on and on and most of the combos are tied to skills that you’d want to be using anyway.
But here’s my body – So rez me maybe?

You use them when you get the chance I agree, but usually it’s more costly to force a combo field to happen instead of just taking a certain given opportunity to make them happen.
Like on my mesmer the common field that usually pops up is the Ethereal field:(http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ethereal_Field). Now, if I’m using my Greatsword…. I’m not gonna purposely cast a Chaos Storm under me with no enemy inside the same circle range just so my Mirror Blade (Skill 2 on the Greatsword) will proc a 2 stack confusion combo effect on the enemy – or, I wouldn’t waste a Feedback cast against a melee enemy just so that using a skill like ‘phase retreat’ (Skill 2 on the Greatsword) would proc a chaos shield on myself. Plus, most procs. have really low statistics that comes with their durations/stacks to make them even close to relevant in long fights.
My point here is that combos are only useful in a “specially given situations”. It might be useful to know what each finishers procs. under what combo fields….. but at the end of the day, you take what the situation gives you and apply fields like that – IMO anyways, that’s much more efficient than trying to aggressively proc a 3 sec Chaos Storm by wasting two skills on it. Again, I’m agreeing that understanding what finishers proc in what field is definitely useful, but most of the time when there are no fields set up… intentionally putting combos together will usually be a huge waste compare to just straight-up going through your routine core attack plan which benefits you MUCH MUCH more under the situations where there no relevant combo field appearing simultaneously to proc your combo finishers.
They’re also usually not part of your core builds & are more lenient to being add-ons; that’s why I called them “irrelevant” → towards how your core build functions.

No no no, i already know about the whole flaming arrow stuff. Im talking about the description on some skills lile fire circle is combo initiator, and then phoenix and dragon tooth are combo finishers. So if you did the circle first then the other two would that do something special?
If you look at this video now i think i understand my question lol, you will se that the combo gives might, but does that apply on everyone?

To add to the posts above a ranger with ground trap skills and a spider has four combo easy fields – fire , chill , poison , poison . Every arrow that passes though adds to the damage of the shoot turning the rangers lack luster bow skills deadly. Chill trap has no Dg but a 5 seconds of chill with its combo field can add 11 more tics of 66% less movement and skill recharge and that’s without using Qz.
Not sure how other classes fair but for my Neco who had never hit for a combo in 80+ levels of play . So what class and how you trait your skills will plays a big part in weather you will benefit from a combo fields or not.
