I’m trying to craft a exotic Sinister Intricate Gossamer Insignia so I can use it to craft an ascended insignia. The wiki says I need 5 globs of ectos, 5 gossamer patches and 1 sheet of charged ambrace. Which I have all of, but it won’t let me place them into the discovery slots. I have 500 armorsmith. What am I overlooking?

Sinister isn’t discovered, it’s bought from the vendor in the Silverwastes in the Pact camp.

And for future reference: Exotic recipes in general are not discoverable, you must buy or loot it to unlock it.

Special tip: It’s way cheaper to build another ascended insignia to build a weapon with other stats, and then convert this weapon with an exotic sinister insignia via mystic forge.

Black Diamond is Viper not Sinister.

Yup, ascended Viper’s is “expensive” more because of the map-specific ascended mats, not the black diamonds. Well black diamonds are expensive of course, but the ascended mats are why people use the MF.
