Question about getting new gear
I typically buy my gear off of the trading post. (:
Doesn’t that cost gold though? I am only level 39, I don’t really have any… I thought about buying some off merchants (you know, the stuff that costs some silver & bronze) in different areas at times but I wasn’t sure if that was stupid or not.
buy it off merchants until you’re 80
hi,
If you go for greens the trading post isn’t too bad.
Limit search to a few levels around what you want then sort by price and buy what you can afford. Usually at each level a couple of items are very popular and expensive but many are available for a couple of silvers. Do this every 10 or 15 levels and it works ok.
Also maybe sell some of your mats, if you have been harvesting everything you will have quite a bit of coins worth of mats in your bank. But I would advise not selling any of the top tier mats, they are hard to get and you may want them for ascended crafting latter.
I leveled to 80 off of looted gear and some bought stuff from TP in my 70+ levels… By then you get enough karma to buy tier 3 cultural weapons which are ok until you can find something better, and those don’t cost gold.
The point is. You really shouldn’t worry about gear until you hit lvl 80. Then do dungeons or something to gear yourself or search online for options. This game isn’t packed with loot, but if you want loot, you can do world boss events like Frozen maw and stuff. Those give a chest at the end that gives (mostly ok) loot according to your level, so if you’re still not 80 you might find something useful there.
But really, dungeons are full of loot and chests so, do one every now and then and you’ll be fine.
These are ways I’ve geared all my characters:
Trading Post
Crafting
“Heart”/Karma Vendors – check the vendors that appear after you finish a heart.
Champion/World Boss Farming – Tequatl, Triple Wurm and many of the Champions around the world drop a ton of green armor/weapons and some Rares/Exotics/Ascended.
Dungeons, especially fractals.
Special Events/Living Story Events: Often they have events with bosses or lots of mobs that will drop a lot of green gear and some rares/exotics.
The vendors at the end game cathedrals have fulls sets of exotic gear, backpieces and accessories for just Karma.
Karma vendor in WvW has all weapon and armors in blue, green or yellow. Stats are limited to Power with Toughness added at appropriate level then Vitality later, but it is a source for any piece of equipment.
You can also check the Heart NPCs any time you finish a heart. They usually sell a few pieces of gear appropriate to the level of the heart. And they sell it for karma so it won’t use up your gold.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”

NPC gear is crap, buy green or blue from the TP. To make some money just harvest everything you see, and sell some Iron Ore or other crafting mats you get at the TP.
Since you can level here with crafting, a lot of the crafted items in the TP are simply cheaper than the cost of the needed mats.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

You’re 39?
Run Ascalonian Catacombs dungeon.
Story is 50s and each exp path is 1g 50s that will gladly help you in your leveling.
Do the Festival of the Four Winds events until you have enough (400) tokens to buy the Gift of Sprockets.
You can get a decent amount of coin selling watchwork sprockets at the moment, which will help to outfit you with masterwork (green) gear.
