I made a character just before the most recent feature patch and levelled them up a bit until I heard that the trait system was being re-done and decided to stop so that I could experience unlocking traits in the new system (when it came out).

I heard that new characters would go through the new system (which I wanted to experience), and old characters would have their traits auto-unlocked, and I was wondering if this would apply to my character? (which didn’t actually unlock any traits before the update)

Possibly relevant detail: I got the character to level 11 (when you used to get the first trait point) and then stopped, at the time deciding not to assign the trait point.

If the character was created before the patch, it will have all traits unlocked by default. If you want to try the new trait system, you need to reroll.

You could also experience the new system when you try to get the new grandmaster traits. The new system isn’t really much of a system.

You complete a map, a thing pops up to tell you that you have unlocked a trait.
You do an event …
You walk up to a particular chest …

It’s a very clear system that some may ignore and thus obtain traits “randomly” while playing. You can unlock specific traits by clicking on the telescope icon of traits in the tier you are able to access and following the instructions (and it will show you where on the game map you need to go to unlock it).
