Questions/advice for a casual player
Every 5 levels, but a new set of gear from the trading post. It will be sufficient.
Once you hit level 80, you’ll be wanting exotics. If you can’t buy them from the trading post, check the dungeon vendors in LA to find one with stats you like. Do that dungeon to earn enough tokens for the set.
Then start grinding for Ascended gear and infusions.

Every 10 levels is quite sufficient.
You can get by just fine without crafting. In fact on your first character I think it’s probably better to skip it and sell most of the crafting materials you find.
You can start doing dungeons at 30 but you may find AC kind of difficult at that level.

Depends on your class. My necromancer needed every 5 levels, my guardian managed to do 10 without me noticing I’d forgotten to upgrade.

Agreed. Lots of people are crafting stuff merely to get to 400 in that discipline for Legendary weapons. Then selling anything they crafted at a loss, to get what coin they can out of it.

Assuming you can find people to go in there with you. I don’t know how it is for story modes, but you are going have to search for a while to find an explorable mode group that takes anyone below level 80.
The wiki has a list of recommended levels for each dungeon. My recommendation is that, unless you have something else to do in the zone while looking for a group, don’t try them till 80. Finding a group to take you will just take too long.

My ele needs armor upgrades every 5 levels. My warrior’s armor got upgraded every 20 but I did his weapons every 10. My ranger? Dang, he’s still using level 10 jewelry.
I would say buy new armor and weapons from the TP at every x0 level. (10, 20, etc) and buy greens over blurs.
Just go zone to zone doing hearts and events and go for map completion. If a zone is too hard, move to a lower-level one. Keep up with your personal story as well.
You definitely don’t need crafting although it’s an easy level if you do it every now and then.
I would wait until 70+ for dungeons, many groups don’t want low-levels.
Just the Gear thing.
Gear from the Trading Post is worth looking at from time to time even if you don’t think you need anything. Mostly it is so cheap that at your level all they way to 80ish you might find something you like at a very good price. That new thing might even be a couple of levels below you. While there you could even look at gear just a few levels lower than what you have, for example buying a new level 35 Greatsword that is pretty good can cost about 1 silver, when you Filter at the Trading Post and you are level 40 for example filter from levels 35-40 not only 40.
I agree that in general every 10 levels is when you need to go shopping (not more than 10!) Note that gear does not go up in 0 level leaps but at *5 for crafted and * for drops. Keep looking at the Trading Post in other words.

Never buy new gear. It’s absolutely worthless, and you level way too fast to ever need to care. Everything you get from your personal story, plus drops, should have you covered. On all four of my characters, I simply wore blue/greens from drops and personal story until 80, then bought exotics with Karma.
You never have to craft, unless you want to. So yeah, you can get by without it.
Do dungeons whenever you feel like it. It might be hard to find a party on some servers, but really, your level makes absolutely no difference, because likley the other four people will be able to pick up any slack.
The game is really that easy, you don’t really need to worry about anything. A-net doesn’t make games that are challenging, they never have. You just show up and win.
So shines a good deed in a naughty world.

My opinions:
There is nothing wrong with gear from karma vendors, but, at the same time, there is nothing sepcial about it, either. Purchased, crafted, dropped, karma… its all the same in the long run. If a nice peice of armor drops, use it. If you can buy a decent upgrade at a karma vendor, go for it. You should try to keep your gear current, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to replace gear that is 5 levels old—at 10, I’d consider going out of my way.
You can get by without crafting, but there is a catch. As a crafter, you can turn raw materials into finished products. The value of the products tends to be around the value of the raw materials. Therefore, you can generally sell your raw materials and buy the finished product with minimal difference in cost, should you have a strong desire for crafted equipment. However, you lose flexibility; you have to rely on somebody providing the goods you want at a price you will pay and paying the price you want for materials—this all can take time. As a crafter, you have to invest time and money into the craft, but you lose the reliance on others. Of course, your time and money has value, but you do gain experience for it…
So while you don’t necessarily lose by avoiding crafting, you don’t gain, either.
My elementalist ran AC story mode for the first time at 30. She did just fine, but I should point out that I knew the dungeon already from having run it on my guardian. Being a higher level doesn’t make you any stronger necessarily, and lower levels can have some advantages. The most important points to remember when running dungeons are teamwork, caution, and preparation. My elementalist did as well as she did because I knew the dungeon and she had top-shelf gear for the level. Everybody knew the fights and what roles we all brought to the table, so it was pretty easy. When you have people that just run ahead and spawn a dozen ghosts at once… you have problems, no matter how good your gear is.

As a casual player myself, I have never bought armour from the trading post. The above posters are certainly correct that it’s a reliable way to get stuff that’s very good for your level and it won’t cost that much. However I get through just fine with drops along the way (I enjoy the random element, it makes average drops more exciting) and I generally buy stuff from karma vendors if either its stats are decidedly nicer than my current (meaning that piece of gear has fallen behind) or the appearance is cool.
Crafting can get you nice stuff (and more customised to stats you use) but as has already been said, you can probably buy other people’s crafted gear on the TP. Dungeons start at 30, but you should do them whenever you feel like it – it’ll still be some challenge at later levels, haha.
Finally your first question, follow your personal story (if you do stuff that the recommended levels the rewards will be more useful to you) but there’s nothing you should be doing, just wander and do what takes your fancy!
