So I bought a rare (yellow) unidentified Grey Dye from the trading post for over 4 gold. And I got a common (blue) dye. Is that normal? I mean if that’s the case I’m better off taking the chance on buying 5 plain old unidentified dyes and hoping for the best. I’m so very disappointed. Thanks for the help or words of wisdom.

That is normal.
A rare unid can give rare, masterwork, fine.
A masterwork unid can give masterwork, fine.
A find unid can give just fine.

It’s normal. Whether or not it was a good idea to design it that way is another topic altogether.

So, yes. You are better off buying unid dyes. Imo you’re better off directly buying the dyes you want rather than doing the ole RNG dance with the unid dyes at 80 silver each and getting a dye worth a few silver when you open one.

Thank you so much. It was fun getting the dyes when they were 46 silver each (I have quite the collection of colors now), but yeah, now that they’re almost 1g each it’s not as fun. Will just save for the ones I want. Thanks again for explaining!
