I managed to reach level 80 with a generous help from Tomes and Writs. Now that I’m level 80, what should my priority be in spending gold?

Should I try to buy weapons?
Or should I try to buy traits?

I’m playing a guardian, and I assume that, for a while, I should just save gold/karma until I can afford the temple karma armor.

If you think you can do the task for a trait, try to get it though that method. Always best to do it for free if possible.

Concerning you gear, it depends on what stat combinations you want. Refer to this page for a full list of stat combinations, and their acquisition: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Equipment_acquisition_by_stats

I would say traits are more important than gear myself, because you can succeed in most just using sub-80 gear, unless you go for high level dungeons and such.

I think that you should get exotic weapons and armor to start with

Thanks, and sorry for the double post. I actually tried to edit the first post to include the detail about saving karma for the temple armor, and I somehow double posted instead of editing the original post. Not sure what I did wrong.

I’m going with the meta gs // s+foci 45005 build (well, I might make it 46004 if that’s possible), so it doesn’t seem too expensive (probably around 5~7 gold total?).

If it’s cheap enough, guess I’ll just buy it so I can enjoy the game instead of worrying about finding the right enemy at the right time, dungeon, etc etc.

First tell me how much karma and gold do you have atm ? Guard can use cheap runes but very effective ( Rune of Flame Legion ) about Sigil it’s a little bit expensive but no worries you can save up gold and buy them in time.

About trait i suggest you to unlock it not to buy it unless the unlock requirement is too hard.

I have about 30 gold and about 75K karma points.
Salvaging everything and not opening bags/boxes until hitting level 80 (and selling all mined/harvested items) really paid off in the short run.

I thought the I would save karma points for the temple armor (yeah…. long way off for that 250K or so needed) and spend gold on traits + weapons (GS/Sword/Focus/Sceptor). I’ll probably “make do” with the armor I find on the field until then.

Or anyways, that was my plan.

I would just save the gold and karma period. You will need them for more important things that are harder to get in the future than traits or exotic gear. Most of the traits are pretty easy to get just by playing the game (just maybe spend a few gold for those that you consider too much of a pain). As for the armour, I would personally avoid any karma armour as it can not be salvaged (to retrieve your runes) and that karma can be used for more important things. Just go run CoF p1/p2 (and p3 if you want but it takes longer and can be a pain with inexperienced pugs) daily for several days and you will have all the tokens you need for all your armour.

Edit: Also, I would plan to get most of the traits as well so that your guardian can be more versatile for example going meditation/AH/Frac hammer/etc as the situation requires it. Don’t box yourself into just one or two builds.

If it is any kind of indication, I just geared my new 80 thief in full exotic armour, weps and accessories (had an ascended account bound ring and necklace already) with sigils and runes and bought just the traits I need for my build for around 90g in all. Bear in mind I did this the ultra lazy way as I had the spare gold so no doubt savings could be made (had enough karma for 3 or so zerker bits but used my WvW tokens for 2 bits instead).

Escapeplan / Condi Engi | Escapeplan B / Zerk Thief
Mazeplan / Crap Mesmer | When We Escape / Staff Guard

I run a guard as my main and the first thing I did was get exotic armour, exotic weapons and runes. I’d say exotic gear will get you fight-ready for anything in the game, with the exception of high-level fractals. If you have the laurels, I’d also invest in ascended trinkets, the stats will give your build a nice overall boost. Just remember they are account bound and can’t be sold, so decide on your build and choose wisely.

Traits are also important, but I would not unlock them all now. Just unlock the ones you decide you’ll need for your build – that is, if you’re mostly PvE (incl. dungeons and fractals). If you also plan to participate in PvP and WvW on regular basis you will need a lot more of your traits to adapt for each activity.

Note: all of the above requires recognising your preferred play style. Do you rush in and bash the heck out of everything before they can land a blow? Or do you hang back to bolster your group and strike at the opportune moment?

Go online and check out posts/videos of players promoting their builds, then tweak them to suit your own playing style.

Superior Runes of the Flame Legion are a good budget alternative for the more popular Runes of Strength, Scholar, Hoelbrak. Just make sure you trait for extra burn damage and duration if you choose Flame Legion runes.

Equipping my guard in exotic armour and weapons (GS/Sw+Foc), superior runes + sigils cost me just under 20g – but, I crafted all my armour, only bought weapons and runes from TP. Bear in mind, this was about a year ago, TP prices may have changed…
