Hi All

I’m doing some research on why MMO players like to mainly play MMOs and compare their reasons to play with those who are mainly FPS players (no rude suggestions please). This is for a project that I need to do for the final part of my Psych degree.

I’ve put up a questionnaire on SurveyMonkey that I am using to collect data for this – it takes no more than 10 minutes to complete and there is a £20 amazon prize draw (local currencies will be catered for) for those completing the questionnaire – just put your email address in where asked at the end of the questionnaire to enter.

Not sure what you’re asking for in 11 and 13. “What percentage of time do you devote to online multiplayer for the above game?”

I took that to mean ‘how much game time was spent within your primary game playing with other players’. When it was repeated for 13, now I’m wondering if you meant ‘What percentage of overall daily game time do you devote to your primary/secondary game’.

Please clarify?

Thanks for completing the questionnaire (and the others above as well).

Those two questions refer to the time spent in online mode for the two primary games you play, but they don’t really differentiate between what you do in that time. For MMOs such as GW2, technically you are always 100% because you have no option to truly play single player (although as others have noted, you don’t necessarily have to do any social interaction or group up).

The questionnaire has been adapted from one that was designed for only MMO players, so as to include more general questioning so that we can target FPS players and compare the responses (we are also putting notes up on their forums too). For them, they may never play online in multiplayer modes, or completely online by only doing deathmath, CTF etc. (think that is mostly the case for Battlefield players), or somewhere in between. Similarly for RTS like Starcraft. We basically want to compare MMO players with multiplayer FPS and singleplayer FPS when it comes to motivation.

If in future we want to go further then that question will clearly need to be changed. At the moment I can group all MMO together as assumed online only, but if I looked into RPG player motivations in general (e.g. Pillars of Eternity, Dragonage etc.) then clearly questions 11 and 13 are far from ideal and will need revising.
