Returned after a long break
If PvP or WvW isn’t your thing, then dungeons and Fractals are your likely end-game content. With Fractals, what’s likely happened is that you tried to join a high-level Fractals, where you WILL get destroyed if you don’t have the right gear. Do low-level Fractals (1-9) and you should have no problems.
Many players are now also working towards Ascended weapons/armor, which are the higher tier of equipment. However, it’s expensive, time-consuming and doesn’t offer THAT much of an increase of power compared to Exotics, so feel free to skip it if hardcore grinding or having BiS items doesn’t appeal to you.
You can also try catching up on the Living Story, which is currently in Kessex Hills. Unfortunately you can’t play through past Living Story chapters, so you’ll just have to settle for stories from “those who were there”.
Finally, the Wintersday festivities are going on in Lion’s Arch at the moment. Try out the Winter Wonderland JP, the Snowball Mayhem activity, and my personal favourite, the Bell Choir.
I tried the 1-9 fractals, that’s where I was told I needed better gear still, most of my stuff is blue, whatever that means. I’m not sure where or how to get ascended or exotic things either. When you say dungeons, which ones do you mean? I think I only did one back when I started playing. Thanks for taking the time to reply by the way.

Most peoples first goal when they reach 80 is decide on the sort of build they want for their character and then work on getting some exotic armour and weapons for that build. I’ve always found this guide a useful starting point, have a look at the ‘exotic’ information under armour and weapons headings and see which of the options of obtaining them suits you best or is most achieveable. Then you might want to have a look at the options for ascended under the Trinkets heading.
As for dungeons there are eight main ones in game, not including Fractals, and we occasionally get a temporary dungeon as part of Living Story updates. Each dungeon has a story mode, which supports the lore and experiences of your character’s Personal Story if you’ve chosen to follow that. Completing the storymode of a dungeon also unlocks your ability to open the explorable paths, of which most dungeons have 3 different paths you can run (Arah has 4 explorable paths). You can still do explorable paths of a dungeon even if you haven’t done the storymode, but someone else in your party will need to open for you.

Thank you very much for the info! Now I just need to find a decent guild I suppose.
Hey Shadeyrou,
A quick way to gain gold and gear yourself as a brand new level 80 is do map completion in level 70-80 areas. You’ll have 40 mats and some pieces of exotic armors. You can keep the one you can use and sell the rest on the trading post.
Another easy way is to hook up with a World Champion Boss train that run form 3 hours every night after server reset. The one I would recommend is the big one in Ferguson Crossing server, organized by the lovely commander Bonbonnie. PM her and follow her tag around. Each event completion will give you one guaranteed rare equipement that sells for 35-45 silver each, lots of blue and green for salvaging to get mat and magic find, and karma for temple armor.
If you are interested in dungeons, I recommend the current meta builds which requires full berserker exotic gears, so either save gold to buy them, or work towards them slowly with dungeon tokens. Once you’re experienced in dungeons, there will be more venues to earn gold for various activities.
Cheers,
