Returning Player LF Profession Advice
The profession sections are almost always negative. As a general rule people are much more likely to come to the forum and post about things that bother them than things they like. Unless it’s just after a balance update where a long-requested change has been made.
Anyway, I’m no expert but I’d recommend trying a ranger. I’ve heard people say they’re one of the best for solo open-world PvE, and they’re also accepted in WvW and dungeons now (which they weren’t for a long time).
Whatever profession you pick I recommend choosing equipment that gives you points in toughness and/or vitality. Those boost your armour and health respectively so they make it much easier to survive. Purely offensive stats are popular in this game because you can survive most things thought well-timed dodging and moving around during the fight but if you prefer less reactive gameplay or like me your reflexes aren’t always up to the task you’ll benefit from some extra defense. And as long as it’s just 1 of the 3 stats it won’t hurt your damage too much.

Necro minion master!
I lvled my Necro with this build and it was a lot of fun, not hard, not weak, can solo basically all open world content (minus world bosses ofc), and has a lot of build diversity if you’re not bothered to follow meta builds.
Hope this helps!
The current meta seems to revolve around necros for condi and sustain build, eles for dps in raids and generally any other content, and druids (ranger elite spec) as a competent healer class mostly in raids and high lvl fractals atm. These are all the classes that are usually in high demand most of the time, which sucks for me because I have no interest in any of those classes nor any desire to learn their builds. I mean I don’t even have a necro or ranger lvled to 80, after all these years. It’s just about the playstyle and what feels right for me I honestly don’t care about what’s so in demand these days..
Meta changes with next balance update whjich could eb tomorrow. Just FYI. Nor imo should one base their class on something fleeting; may be sorry later if you don’t actually like the class.
It’s sorta funny looking at profession threads, EVERY one claims they are horrible literally, or complain about OTHERS, and then see their threads they complain how bad they are. And, sPVP is not the same as WvW or Raids or Fractals or Open World; so one class may still be great in Raids but not in WvW, etc. Like go to the Ele forums, you’d think they are the worst class to ever play an MMO……
EVEN SO – it’s all so negative it’s always funny to be u have to be mindful BUT there’s still good infos there.
Hello all!
I did peek into various profession based sub forms and found virtually every single one was peppered with depressing and less than encouraging complaint threads. For example I read that rangers have too many complicated pet problems, warriors are broken with a lot of useless weapons, mesmers are virtually impossible to level and elementalists are apparently too weak for the new maps?
Engi!!!
Notice you didn’t mention them in here so there lies your answer, go Engi!! They are heaps fun and lots of utility. I have only just came back to this game a year ago after getting fed up with WOW and ESO and all those. I have had one of each profession at 80 and have raided with my Rev, Necro, Druid and Engi. If you cruise these forums you will see me on almost every thread, asking for help.
I struggled trying to find a class that was fun yet viable to me, one I wanted to do world completion and all that stuff on, but I have found it with the Engi finally!! And I am viable for raids if I want which is a factor I consider when looking at the profession and how they play out.
So roll one and give it a shot, ya never know. And after all, you have like what, 5 slots anyways so go nuts til one clicks!
Cheers!
Thanks for taking the time to reply everyone!
I’ve been playing around with engineer a little bit (for some reason it’s the only class I never thought to try in the past) and thus far it seems really fun. I’m also going to dust off my old necro who’s sitting pretty around 43 or thereabouts and give her a bit of a go as well to see which feels best.
Thanks again!
