Q:

Hi folks. I haven’t played Guild wars 2 in a very long time, since a few months after its launch, and decided to get back into it. I’ve noticed though theres been a number of changes to proffessions.

At the moment, I’ve been playing a Thief up to level 26. While it’s been enjoyable I find myself feeling really squishy and perhaps dying more frequently than I should be. I’ve been running a Sword/Pistol and D/D build, and while they both work, I feel like I’m doing something wrong…

Can anyone recommend a weapon setup, as well as what healing skill, utilities and traits would be the most optimal while levelling? May try re-rolling otherwise…

While you wait for other answers here, you might consider perusing and/or posting in the Thief sub-forum.

Welcome return, and good luck.

when i run sword/pistol spam #3 skill, gives you an evade for a bit which i find really useful. I also use shortbow as my 2nd weapon set. I use the stealth healing skill and for utitlies more stealth skills lol. I stink on a thief so i find for pve stealthing is your get out of trouble button, since the mobs stop attacking you and don’t follow you so it’s great when you need to run. In general til you get more used to the game, id always run 1 melee set of weapons and 1 ranged set. Do keep your thief though they take lots and lots of practice to get really good, specially for wvw and pvp. Theif is one class that is easy to tell the really really great players from the avg. joe. Main thing is to have fun.

Thief is more dependent on preventing or avoiding damage than other classes. OH pistol gives good access to blind, which might help, and dual pistol has access to high burst which can be a big help getting things down fast.

Beyond that, dodge more, or consider something a bit more robust (warrior, necro, ranger) as an early character, and come back to thief when you are a bit more practiced at the “action” aspects of combat.

FWIW, this “dodge, prevent, or die” model becomes more pronounced at higher levels in thief. It’s not a problem, it’s just a play-style thing.
