Returning after 2 years - I'm lost
Here’s the wiki link for ascended – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ascended
To answer the questions quickly – Yes ascended is better than exotic but I think the difference between full exotic and full ascended is about 10% increase overall. The only place you really need ascended gear is in Fractals of the Mist, pretty much everything else can be done in exotics.
I generally find people in game are helpful but if you’re not having the same experience then it may be worth looking at joining a guild that is willing to help new or returning players. Check out the Guild Recruitment forum or put up a post in the Looking for Guild forum.

Yes they are better than exotic but it’s hotly debated whether that matters in PvE or only in WvW (since PvP doesn’t use your equipment).
And it’s a long, costly and drawn out process to build ascended gear. It’s like giving a man a hatchet and a stretch of woods and tell him to build a log cabin. There are materials that you can only gather doing various activities and can’t be bought on the TP. And the quantities required are quite a lot versus how much you receive per event.
This is the recipe for a heavy helm with berserker stats.

The stuff you can buy will cost you over 90g, for one piece. But it’s the 6 stacks each of Bloodstone Dust, Empyreal Fragments and Dragonite Ore for an entire armor set that can take a while not to mention the cost of 120 skill points and 189K of Karma. And you need to get your armor crafting to 500 as well because only you can make your own ascended armor.

Ascended is actually only about a 5% improvement over Exotic. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Most foods and some traits give you bigger bonuses.
There are 3 types of Ascended equipment:
- Weapons are worthwhile to get (if you are willing to make the investments). The 5% increase on base weapon damage is significant.
- Armor is not very worthwhile. Because many armor pieces have relatively low stats, a 5% increase is not very noticeable. If you choose to go for armor, you should probably start with the chest item, because that gives the biggest bonus out of all pieces.
- Trinkets (rings, accessories, amulets, back items) are very worthwhile, but you also do not need to craft them. Save up on laurels (by doing daily and monthly achievements) and, optionally, badges of honor (by doing WvW), and you can simply buy these from laurel vendors. Make sure to go for an amulet first, as this has the highest stats.

And you can’t use two of the exact same ring. That’s what “Unique” means.

Yes and No.
There are two trinkets available with the same base stats (e.g. Cleric’s), but one of them has a defensive infusion slot (for either Agony resistance or a defensive stat = Druid’s Circle) while the other one has an offensive slot (for Agony resistance or a offensive stat = Healing Signet).
You can even circumvent this, by crafting (very expensive) omni infusions that allow you to add an offensive stat to a defensive slot.
Just remember that e.g. you can not equip two “Healing Signets” at the same time.
Long things short on ascended equipment:
>> Stick to exotics for casual game play
>> get ascended trinkets, amulet, rings etc. over time from Laurels that come from dailies/monthlies
>> add Agony Infusions to trinkets if you want to go deeper into Fractals
>> weapons over armour
>> some high end Living Story season 2 stuff requires you to have the ability to have ascended crafting
>> take it slow
>> rather use foods for buffs in WvW
>> enjoy getting to crafting arnour & weapons 500, don’t be in a hurry
>> have fun with your final pieces of ascended weapons and armour in high level fractals or (with WvW infusions) get a small edge over exotic foes (that will beat you in exotic gear if they play better)
Still keeps a volume of Kurzick poems ;)
