Returning player - Ele or Mesmer?
I’m a Mesmer main and I think that Ele is far more viable in both PvE and PvP at the moment. Mesmer is currently in a bad spot.
Both are viable but take on vastly different roles. Ele provides top tier DPS while Mesmer is now almost exclusively a support class. Both are in heavy demand for group content in all game types so it’s mostly a question of what role or playstyle you like.
I play a Mesmer main as well but find Ele more satisfying for casual play. Just grab a staff, berserk gear and enjoy the explosion of huge numbers with very little effort.
Might start up an Elementalist character then – it’s good to always feel useful I suppose. Would anyone mind giving me a break down of all the current classes and what their roles are?
So far I understand
Elementalist – Top tier DPS (the most?) with some utility I assume
Mesmer – Support/Utility

Assuming you have HoT purchased
True ele/temp deal the most dps in this game both aoe and single but require some skills to stay alive and very useful with many boons/heal in group. Tempest is a great specs in game.
As for mesmer – yes mes/chrono dps is not high but very fun to play and helpful in many way, can easily solo champ or any 1v1 situations due to clones, also chrono have a very good tanking build right now.
War/Berserker – gameplay are pretty much the same as b4 just more burst. For PvE anything should do but the only build can be useful in grp us PS build, for PvP/WvW there are only 1 and 1 only build keep war alive – Def trait is a must, easy class tho.
Guard/DH – can now use longbow good burst, most balance class after so many patches, remain helpful and fun in many way, good tanker in raid, good for PvE wise but no passive movespeed is still an issue.
Rev/Herald – very strong, known as “boonbot” you can have perma swiftness, fury, might, regen and protection like a mix between guard and war, fun to play but still need serious revamp and bug fix – deal more dps than war even guard,
Necro/Reaper – a monster in solo play, condi reaper is one of the best condi class in game, can solo almost anything without a sweat, very easy mode class, both power and condi build are good but ppl prefer condi due to raid also can play as tanker in raid.
Ranger/Druid – a support/healer class, not much of a monster like necro but with pet and new heal trait ( druid ) can give tons of survival, a fun class, also has 33% passive movespeed, condi druid is very strong, ranger/druid will be a good choice to get used to the game.
Thief/DD – a strong dps class with staff, tons of dodge but require skill to stay alive in PvE wise. As for PvP/WvW – one of the most annoying class in game.
Engi/Scrapper – sorry i dont have much experience with this class can’t say much except its a great class for PvP/WvW and have a strong condi build.

You make it very hard to pick a character! I’m unsure if I want to roll with an Elementalist and try something new, or re-learn how to play my Thief or even Warrior. I’ve always wanted to try a Necro.. Gah, too many viable options!
I just want to stay away from the nerfhammer – hate having a character go from hero to zero in a patch
Hero to zero sound like war, after HoT released they just not as good as they used to anymore, lack of build versatiles, def trait is mandatory without it you lose access to Adrenal Health the one thing keeping war alive in many way, dont get me wrong war is still a very good class in PvP/WvW and PvE just need some love from dev.
If you like ele just try it worth class to play, guard and ele is a save choice to avoid too much nerf from anet. And for necro its a selfish class not many team support abilities except for Blood Magic trait but can’t ignore the fact that necr/reaper is the best when it comes to solo stuff.
you have 5 char slots just try them all, like me i dont have a main character whenever i feel bored of this tool i jump to others, don’t think too much dude !!
