Guild Wars 2

Hey guys, 3 days headstart player here, I haven’t played the game in a while (about 5 months, tried to return 2 months ago, but didn’t stay long due to a backlog of other games i had).

I’m looking to start playing Guild wars 2 again, been jumping between classes just to get a feel for it again, and I’m enjoying it, want to get back into it, however I’m stumped for a class.

A lot has changed since i last played, thiefs seem to be not as viable as they once were, warriors have been nerfed, elementalists are now top tier, engineers are viable, back when i last played, it was the opposite for everything i just stated.

So now i’m at an impasse, which class fits what i’m after?

I’m after a class that is viable in all forms of play, however mainly dungeons, high level fractals and WvW roaming/flipping camps.

Other than occasionally following the zerg on my old computer and getting roughly 0.2fps, i haven’t really done anything in WvW other than the map completion quite some time ago.

So i’m hoping some of the more experienced players for the current content could provide me with some information that would help me gravitate towards a certain class.

Well, I think that a full zerker warrior would be ideal for you then.. I know that lots of dungeon parties want nothing else but these kinds.. Also for fractals it should work like a charm..

Concerning the WvW part: Full zerker is glass cannon, so you’ll have to keep that in mind when roaming.. Flipping a camp shouldn’t be too much of a hassle, but enemy players could make quick work of you if not careful..

I agree with what Tribio said. Tribio though, you should consider how much warriors have been nerfed. I think people keep asking for them in dungeons a great deal out of habit! (I’m a skeptic)

Joshua, a Warrior is a great choice, but for a returning player like you, it might not offer new and interesting insights / playstyle. That’s a huge reason to play and discover, for me!

Why don’t you try something new? Why not an Elementalist, a Ranger, or a Necro? Of these, only Eles are the prime time queen right now, but if you get good enough, you can do magic on all of them

Elementalist is one of the most wanted classes in PvE parties for dungeons/fractals because of their damage and buffing (specifically, , so that’s one class you might want to try out. I know staff eles are also really good in WvW zerging, but I’m not 100% sure about how they work roaming (I think d/d celestial is very good, but double-check?).

Engineer is about the same. Much less of a demand than ele because 1. you only really need one in a party and 2. it’s one of the least played classes so a lot of people don’t know what they’re capable of but when played well it’s top tier damage, amazing utility and great versatility, which means they can do a party a lot of good in dungeons/fractals and can cover gaps in party composition (is the ele not stacking might? pop a fire field and blast it up. no thief? boom smoke field. guardian slacking? throw elixir U. etc etc). They’re good roamers thanks to their mobility too, and while again this isn’t my area of expertise I think condition or hybrid builds are the favored approach for engies in WvW.

Re: what the others said – warriors are honestly only wanted because it’s hard to mess up as one. They have only medium-tier damage and you only really need one in your party comp (for banners, not for the damage) to maximize things. Food for thought.

Well first of all lets just amend some things you mentioned there;

1. “thiefs seem to be not as viable as they once were” – Although they did receive some nerfs they are still the best single target dps in game and part of the meta in dungeons, fractals, and wvw. Only place they have been hurt is pvp, and that is not due to their nerfs too much but more so the issue of celestial brawler classes which is a whole other issue.

2. “warriors have been nerfed” – The nerf is negligible or at most, annoying. In Dungeons and fractals I hardly find myself being out of adrenaline which was their biggest nerf. In wvw and pvp, due to their might stacking prowess they are still a great contender and also one of the 3 classes that uses the celestial gear most effectively.

3. “elementalists are now top tier” – they’ve always been top tier, while their dps wasn’t at the very top it was always in the top 3 and right now on single target they sit at 2nd on the list, not much has changed for them. Even with FGS nerf, they are the best all rounders.

About your question about class choice, well here’s the current dungeon/fractal meta;
Warrior (banners), Thief (stealth/damage), Ele (might stacking), guardian/mesmer (reflects/stability/utility), last spot is toss up but ranger sounds good to me because the only damage boost you are missing to the party is their spirits.

Now lets forget the meta because unless you min/maxing uber speed runs it doesn’t matter. Tl:DR I would suggest warrior, ele, thief or ranger class right now because they all provide something to a party while still doing amazing dps.

Just wanted to pop in and say thank you all for the information and feedback, only just been able to get back on the forum, and i’ve decided (after some intense googling and staring at pictures of other peoples characters) i’ve settled on Engineer. :-)
