You can play the new WvW borderlands.
Check the wiki for Ascended armor.
The expansion exists, I don’t know exactly what you mean.

Yes, there are still groups doing the old content.

You are locked out of the following things (of interest):

  • No gliding.
  • No new maps.
  • Masteries, including Pact Mastery (which offers true auto-looting) and Fractal Mastery (which offers bonus rewards for fractals).

You can still do all the old content, including fractals (although you’ll be limited to ~L70 due to the max Agony Resistance one can afford; currently there are 100 levels)

The WvW maps were part of the base game update, presumably because they decided they didn’t want to split WvW players based on whether they had HoT. At the moment only the new maps are available, but apparently they play to cycle between them periodically (we don’t know how frequently yet).

Exotic gear is still perfectly fine for everything except Raids (which you can’t do without the expansion) and high level Fractals (where you need agony resistance), but if you want to upgrade it’s basically a matter of crafting it, getting a few pieces from difficult/expensive achievements or getting very luck with drops. You can find out how to craft it on the wiki:

As for what there is to do everything that was in the game before HoT is still there. You’ll find there’s fewer people doing dungeons because they drastically reduced the gold reward. It’s still completely possible to put a group together, just much harder to insist on experienced level 80 speedrunners.

There may also be fewer people doing things like Silverwastes because all the HoT maps include map-wide meta events so there’s more choice for people who enjoy them, but with the megaserver grouping everyone together when there’s fewer people in a map there’s still more than enough people around to complete the meta event chain on a regular basis.

And of course there’s World Bosses (the Shatterer recently had an update which makes it a bit more complicated, but much easier than Tequatl) and all the stuff for solo players and small groups like map completion, story, mini dungeons, jumping puzzles etc. The UI for Guild Missions has changed but they’re still there and in terms of what you do to complete them they still work the same way.

As far as I know PvP is exactly the same, although there’s a new map type (available to everyone) and some kind of league where you get icons next to your name if you do well.
