Ruby Orb budget alternative?
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
All of the useful runes are cost a lot of gold so its better to use ruby orbs
Haven’t tested so not 100% sure of how good they are but I’ve seen Flame Legion runes recommended for guards and engies as a low-cost alternative, if you can keep up the burning.
If you are unwilling to “commit” to those armor sets (paying for runes that you will never get back), stick with the Orbs (they are not that bad…..just worse than what they used to be).
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
Use Scholar runes. Because of the Ferocity nerf, Ruby Orbs are abysmally bad now. Scholar Runes are craftable for roughly 4g right now, and 24g for a set of armor you might never recover really isn’t that bad if you use it a lot. These are also much cheaper than Strength/Hoelbrak, and are way better for general purpose dungeons.
I think someone mentioned scholar might be better for speed run dungeon(assume you can keep high hp all the time).
I’m not sure for fractal if you can maintain high hp all the time.
I wouldn’t worry about it really. I dont’ think you can even tell the difference.
Thanks for all the suggestions. It wouldn’t be a problem if I didn’t have to gear across 3 characters or if the runes could be salvaged, though in reality it’s certain reasonable to think they’ll pay for themselves before I get ascended anyways. Though I mostly see dungeons as a source of gold and isn’t my main interest.
Scholar Runes seems to be a pretty good goal though. For flame legion I know that guardians can get good burn uptime with virtue of justice, but where are engineers getting it from? The fire bomb?

there’s a trait Incendiary powder in the explosives line. Another GM trait from fire arms- napalm increases burning duration by 33 %
For a DPS guardian and thief, ruby orbs are a terrible choice now, with Flame legion runes even worse.
You do not need runes of strength/hoelbrak with these classes unless playing solo with no other source of might, plus you need sigils of strengh and/or battle in your weapons to make these runes worthwhile.
If looking for DPS runes these are good choices in descending order:
Scholar
Ranger
Eagle

Hmm, yea incendiary powder is a good trait, but that seems to be more for condition builds; I usually take the trait for 10% more explosion damage, not sure if that’s the best.
As for ranger runes; I do have them… on my ranger. The other classes don’t seem to be able to take advantage of the companion bonus.

The 6th bonus triggers as long as you have a Minipet equipped and showing. Ofc this might get changes somewhen in the future, but for now it’s the reason why Sup Ranger Runes are suggested as a cheap alternative for DPS builds.

Fire bomb burns for 2s x 4 pulses, with a cooldown of 10s. If that’s not enough you have the flamethrower and its tool belt skill to increase the burn uptime.
Ranger runes will also count minis as pets, so if you have a couple lying around that can be good.

And if thats not enough, you can trait for incendiary amo (6s burn on crit, 10s cooldown)
Ranger runes may have been fixed though: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Talk:Superior_Rune_of_the_Ranger

Thanks for the post. I read this thread last night and was considering buying a set for a char, since I use minis all the time.
(Reset indent) Recent tests confirm that the bonus is applied for any type of summons, including minis, those summoned from gizmos (e.g. Summon Familiar (bat), etc. The only one I’m not sure about it is if it still doesn’t work for minions (or if it’s different in PvP altogether). Please update both this article and Rune of the Ranger if/when someone has new data (or ANet decides that some of these shouldn’t count). – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 02:29, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
I tested quickly in HoTM post-Feature Pack 2 and was able to trigger the bonus from clones + phantasms, but not from miniatures.--TahiriVeila (talk) 23:21, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the speedy test results. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 23:23, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
