Hey guys, am looking for feedback on which is a better class to play and have more fun with overall. Predominantly play PvE but have been dabbling in WvW. I have tried Warrior, Ranger, Thief, and Mesmer. Thief was my favorite class and Mesmer/Warrior is tied for second. Hated playing with a ranger, was no fun at all.

So basically I am looking at either a Guardian or an Elementalist. I have no idea what to expect from an Engineer but they sound corny and you don’t see alot of Engineers in the world (must be for a good reason methinks). So if anyone can give an opinion on what they thought was the best to play with out of these, I would relly appreciate it. Thanks

P.S.- No Necros, don’t like the whole zombie squad (ie. blood fiend) and don’t find it cool and is actually gross looking so not interested in them.

Guardian has some similarity with Warrior – heavy armor, melee-focused (not as many range option as Warrior though). However Guardian has a much lower base HP compared to Warrior, but comes with a variety of skills and traits that boost defense and mitigate damages. Generally more survivable than warrior but probably DPS a little less than Warrior.

But if you are really looking at a vastly different playing experience, I would recommend the Elementalist. Commanding the 4 elements and ability to switch between them depending on situation is fun. While Guardian or Warrior can usually just rush into a fight, Elementalist squishy body requires careful planning and tactics to maximize DPS and survivability. I feel it is a profession that generally requires a lot more attention from the player, even in PvE. But it is fun.

Elementalist has a much higher skill cap.

Guardian excels at teamplay and support/utility status as well as being a tank. Trying to deal heavy dps on this will end out lackluster though.

Ele has good aoe and dps (not as much as thief) and also ability to provide some support in the form of fields, boons and access to direct heals, though not as versatile as mesmer. Also a rather high skill cap.

Engineer is a pretty interesting class really. They can spec to do quite a variety of roles but after that they become less flexible and tied to the traits they have. The tool belt mechanic is worth messing around with and looking into.

Necros actually have quite a bit besides the zombie squad thing, they are heavy duty and heavy on condition controls.

All in all I suggest checkin out their playstyles in pvp and experimenting around to see what you like.

only very shortly played a guardian but really didn’t like it.

I started the game with an ele wich is a very nice class, but also very squishy. So at a sudden point in the game I decided to leave it for a while and not really knowing what to pick I decided: Hey lets try the engineer. It was pretty soon that I really really liked it and it turned out my lvl 80. I think the reason that you don’t see a lot of engineers has to do with the kits. They frighten a lot of people, but are very fun.

It will come down to personal preference. AwwGee gave a good objective overview.

I find that Ele has a much higher skill cap than Guardian, or maybe my intuitive skills make Guardian work better for me. My Ele is still 27 despite having been made at launch, while my Guardian is 80 and is my go-to for dungeons. She just keeps on staying alive! Whereas on my Ele I fought 45 minutes through a PS to a boss that I just could not solo. Brought in a Warrior from my guild and he cleared it all for me in 5 minutes. Again, could be my own issues there.

I have a 42 Necro now, much more fun than I expected. She likewise is tough to kill, and there’s no need for any ugly minions at all. Though she’s a cheerful woman who just puts up with the ugliness at need, calling the blood fiend a “balloon” for instance to make it seem less gross, and wears vivid colors. I can see giving her my fairy wand scepter skin …

I have a level 80 Ele and absolutely love her. Eles are easy to play, but difficult to master. There’s a lot of versatility and they can bring a lot to the table. And swapping attunements keep the gameplay incredibly interesting.

P.S.- No Necros, don’t like the whole zombie squad (ie. blood fiend) and don’t find it cool and is actually gross looking so not interested in them.

As mentioned above, there’s quite a bit more to the Necro than the zombie squad thing. In fact, the predominate builds for condition damage and burst damage (or hybrid builds of the two) don’t really make use of pets. Not even the Blood Fiend (Consume Conditions and/or Well of Blood FTW). I have a level 45 hybrid necro with zero pets and found the build really offers a lot of kick and complexity of gameplay
