I have a stack of black lion kits, and have been using them since launch on rares. I’m pretty familiar with the return rate of ectos. Something changed very recently though.. Ok, my sample size is not very big, granted, but an average of 1 ecto out of 4 golds, I’ve NEVER seen that. Anyone else noticed a difference?

Isn’t that what the black lion salvage kits say the rate is? 25%?
If it was better before then it was bugged, and what you’re seeing now matches the tooltip.

P.s. I could be wrong about that tooltip. I’m writing this from my phone and 25% chance to salvage something better than basic components from a BLSK is off the the top of my head.

25% to get 3 ectos
25% to get 0 ecto

There’s no empirical evidence to support your claim. BLSK are worse at rare recovery. Buy master kits from NPC vendors.

Huh? I don’t think you have an equal change to get 3 ectos than 1.

Probability is not the same as chance.

Regardless as to whether or not ANet’s changed the drop rates or they’ve been/become bugged, if an event has a 25% probability to occur, that does not mean that it will actually occur 1 in 4 times.

It’s just bad luck! ._. I’ve managed to get a decent amount of ectos from my salvage attempts, both Rare and Exotic, and that just boils down to good luck (though watch my score plummet now that I’ve said that).

The Black Lion Salvage Kits have a 50% chance to salvage rare items, the highest percentage among all salvage kits (the next being Mystic and Masters at 25%). You’re right to believe that with a sample size of 4, you will not get accurate results…. try it with a sample size of 100 and I believe you’d see the percentage to be more accurate.

yeah, from my experience, I’d say the odds are closer to:
20% to get 0
40% to get 1
30% to get 2
20% to get 3

Are there better odds for salvaging exotics? I do seem to get more more often from exotics. like maybe 10/30/30/30?

Logically each of the 3 globs of ectoplasm a rare item has a 50% chance of dropping. With 3 positions with 2 choice there are 8 possible outcomes. 3 possibilities of 1 dropping, 3 for 2 dropping, 1 for none and 1 for three dropping. Totalling would make this
13% for 0
38% for 1
38% for 2
13% for 3
Based on my own salvage rates this does not feel right, it feels closer to 25% alround. But I don’t have any reasonable sample set to check this one. As suggested above a set of 1000 would. Be a good start to see a trend.

got about 7:8 ratio

I only use the yellow salvage kit from the vendor and I’ve been getting ecto like crazy from yellow items. In this last week I’ve almost tripled the amount of ectos I’ve received in the previous 3 months.

Last night things appeared to be back to normal. It appears I just had a long, extremely unlucky streak. Don’t know what to make of this, but I should mention the positive stuff, too. Ratio was about 1:1 using black lion kits, or slightly more. As it was before.
