Basically, few days ago i have reached enough laurels (25 of them) to buy another ring at the WvW laurel vendor for 25laurels and 250 bagdes of honor. Since i had 1 asenced ring already (Ring of red Death), i bought another one since there are two slots for rings.
When i tried to equip it though, i could not. I quickly asked my guild members what seemed to be the problem. So they told me that you can’t equip 2 of the same unique rings. Great!
The thing is, I have not found or seen any information regarding unique rings. I simply though unique meant that it is unique because it is ascended and of rare sight. I simply did not know (and there is no “warning” about this) unique means you can only carry 1 of that unique ring. Because of this, i’ve spent hours and hours of gameplay only to waste my time for a misleading unique attachement to a ring.

I have also look up on the forums and found out i was not the only one. Many came across the same issue. A lot of them also sent a ticket to ArenaNet and said they were compensated for this mishap.

I’ve sent two ingame reports and later on also sent a ticket explaining the situation but recieved no reply or ingame compensation. Therefore i am writing this topic because i am confused and think i am being left out or simply not seen.

**NOTE / SUGGESTION to Anet: Please change this current “unique” writing so players can know what exactly unique means so further potential mishaps of fellow players can be eliminated. Or atleast put a “warning sign” or something so players can be informed before buying a second (same) ascended (unique) ring (in my case Ring of red death).

To be honest I don’t know what you want to hear. I know it’s confusing, I was checking my own ascended EQ a few times before I bought a new one. But kitten happens. I’m sure, noone can help you right now. If you are very lucky, ArenaNet shows mercy and u will recieve your laurels again.

In the past if you bought 2 identical rings you could contact support and get the other ring with the different infusion slot.

How long ago find you send off the ticket, less than 3 days? If less than 3 days you need to wait a bit longer. Did you get an automatic acknowledgement email? If you didn’t get the auto email within 24 hours check this thread, Not getting our emails.

Sending in a ticket about a mishaps like this is, ultimately, hit or miss. There’s no telling when, or if, your items will be fixed by someone. Best and only advice I can give is to go about your business, hope you’re lucky enough to get the issue fixed, and prepare to learn a costly lesson if it isn’t.

As much as I wish the mechanic of unique trinkets was better explained before you buy, the only thing you can really do if nothing comes of your ticket is to save the ring for a different character.

I’ve read that if you infuse one of the rings, don’t ask me how you do that I don’t know, but if you do according to what I read you can then wear both your Rings.

Update: I have just recieved a letter from Anet!)

I hope people see this post atleast so they do not make the same mistake as i did.

A unique item, also known simply as a “unique” or as a “green item” for its color in the inventory, is an item considered special and difficult to obtain. In this game an individual could have up to 4 of the same unique weapons equipped on the same character.

So unique does not necessarily mean, can equip only one of them. The definition varies and the game should spell out restrictions at purchase with a warning.

It does, though infusing is really costly.

Anet should have removed that limitation long ago. All it really does is cause more support calls.

Maybe you couldn’t wield them simultaneously but you could put them into your equipment slots and switch between them as you wish. If you so desire you can also customize each of them, binding to that character’s use only.

Not hardly unique, as one of a kind, if you have 4 of them.

A better term than "unique" would be "unique-equipped", as most people would then realize the status of "unique" applies not to its rarity or difficulty to obtain, but specifically in regards to equipping it - whereupon most would soon come to realize that only one can be equipped at any one time.

Though, to be completely true to the term "unique", ANet should make the game check for existing items of that kind in your inventory and on your character, and refuse to sell it to you if you already have one. If it’s unique, you can only ever possess one. :P

That joke aside, though, a pop-up warning saying "Are you sure you wish to purchase [item name]? Only one of this item can be equipped at any one time. Click OK to proceed with buying it." would be nice.

Submit a ticket with Support. You are not the first player to make this mistake (and likely won’t be the last). Support has helped other players resolve this.

Linguistically speaking, “unique” is also a rarity. Further, the definition of “unique” isn’t unilateral – while it can, and often does, mean “there’s only one of these in the entire world” or equivalent, most people come across it in daily interaction as “this would be difficult to find elsewhere”. Used in a sentence, “Luke sure is a unique character”, or “that’s a pretty unique look”, or “your smile is unique”, or “this game has a unique skill system”, or “there are eight unique classes”. This is a paraphrase, and doesn’t actually mean it’s statistically impossible to find it anywhere else, just that it’s difficult – in other words, a reference to rarity, not impossibility.

Further, the single word “unique” doesn’t necessarily have to mean anything in particular to a player. They might not notice it says that (though I admit it’d usually be noticed as it’s in a different text color), or they might think it’s flavor text because it’s so hard to acquire, or otherwise dismiss it for a million other reasons. I’m sure we’ve all heard the phrase “a picture says more than a thousand words” – if this is true, one word says less than a thousandth of a picture, and is not nearly enough to guide a consumer towards the right purchase.

As a closing statement, I just pretended not to know anything about playing MMOs and high-end gearing, and took to Google in search of what “unique” could mean in general, using terms like “mmo unique”, “mmo unique item”, “game unique item” and so on. The results? I found one article explaining it, if I searched for “gw2 unique”, on the official wiki. All other searches yielded no relevant results (some mentions of unique items from Path of Exile, but no explanation as to what that entailed). So if you want to find out exactly what “unique” means in games in general, that’s pretty impossible; specifically for GW2, the answer is out there, but if the player has to actively search the answer out from external sources, it’s obviously not clear enough in-game.

And then there are people who haven’t played other MMOs. Or they only played Guild Wars 1 before this.

That is the first and only other multi player game for me and in that game, the precursor to this game made by the same studio that made this game, that term unique only referred to an item as having the highest stats possible as well as being a drop from a boss. When I read the term unique on ascended trinkets I had no reason to think that it meant, ‘you can equip only one’. Fortunately I had already read a thread about it so I didn’t make the same mistake as the OP did but the Devs did change the meaning of unique from the Guild Wars 1 meaning.

It’s puzzling that after 2 years of people making this error (and I’ve seen a number of threads about this) that they don’t save both purchasers and Support a lot of time and trouble by adding a warning.

By that logic, how can a person buy multiple unique items? “Unique” can mean one-of-a-kind, which these rings obviously aren’t, or it can just mean unusual or remarkable, which doesn’t explain that it’s a restriction.

The word has a special in-game meaning that isn’t be communicated clearly.

It’s not the end of the world, but people are going to continue to buy multiples they can’t use, and it doesn’t have to be that way.

Honestly any unique you have equipped or in your inventory, when mousing over another to buy, should have red text displayed in the item info box of the hover over stating you already possess one.

Also, items like Ascended bought via Laurels at a vendor should have a period of time where you can return it and get your Laurels back. That other game has such a system, and it can help with these issues.

This would actually help a lot. Say, one hour refund time, which (in order to prevent “rent-an-ascended” system) is void after leaving the map it was bought on. For WvW vendors, void after you leave the “safe zone”.

It wouldn’t get rid of the issue, as some people don’t equip the new gear immediately, but most do. Those that don’t, well, they’re still having to go through Support – but that’s significantly fewer.

In addition, “worn” parameter should be used next to accountbound..or else you would be able to return used rings haha

Yes it does, I put an infused red ring and a standard one onto my thief. Works fine as they’re each unique in a wierd way. I later acquired the other zerk ring and moved the infused one to another character

I can confirm it does work. It’s not necessarily ideal, though, as ideally you’d want to infuse all of your ascended gear, and if you infuse both items of the same name, they will once again be mutually exclusive.
