I play Warrior in PvP. Have a Hammer build with full Toughness/Vitality with Regeneration runes, so I’m extremely tanky, and have a lot of CC with the Hammer. So I go charge up front like a warrior is supposed to do, and after a while I just end up dieing all the time, and it’s always the same on death log some bullkitten like ‘172 hits. bleeding 15000 dmg’

wtf? how am I supposed to remove this kitten? Going to give up soon on Melee in PvP

Dunno about you but Rangers get a skill that removes condition damage every 10 seconds. I haven’t done pvp yet but I am assuming in a party they can grant that boon to you.

As a melee or really anything. You cant expect to charge in and not die shortly in pvp or any content against something hard without having cure’s. Now granted i dont know if warriors have condition removal. On my guardian i have atleast 3 different condition removal’s so im assuming warriors have atleast 1.

“So I go charge up front like a warrior is supposed to do.”

there’s your problem right there.

making assumptions based on other games. this one requires a good level of understanding the limits of your, and other, classes to be successful in pvp. it also requires being a little picky about where you fight.

relying solely on your hammer will no doubt see you dead pretty quick, too.

i’ve had warriors slap me down pretty quickly sometimes. usually they move around an awful lot and end up moving me where i don’t want to be moved. or thumping me into the dirt and making me eat their hammer.

gw2 has a whole new dynamic. can’t expect to be the best in one afternoon. practise makes perfect, remember?

There are no tanks in guild wars 2, you need to learn to dodge, stay out of enemy fire, etc. the gameplay is far different than run in and do damage, you need to play it smart.

First off saying get condition removal is all good but when warrior have only 1, and other proffesions can just auto atatck and stack bleeds, that also rules out the other guy saying learn to dodge, ok, I dodge 2 attacks, endurance is empty, they use another auto attack, and here come the conditions. seems this game only favors range.

What do you mean there are no tanks, I didn’t say I was a Tank I said I built very tanky as it seems to help in PvP. what is it with some people so fixed on herrr there are no tanks. I guess Warriors/Gaurdians/Necro (with right build) don’t have more survivability, better toughness, and hp, in short, MORE TANKY, than thief/elem right?

I play a Warrior and I know three abilities that can remove conditions:

Mending: Heal + remove two conditions
Signet of Stamina: Remove all conditions
“Shake it off!”: Removes one condition within earshot.

Plus, Warriors can stack bleeds with a Sword in the main hand.

As you said your self. They are MORE TANKY. They are not tanks. They have no way to hold agro which is the primary defining role of a tank.

Teach me to hold aggro in PVP please.

In PVP a tank is the fattest, unkillable, annoying, zerg-leading sonavabich. Also has abilities that save his party – shields, ally protection, mitigation buffs and so on. Tank spec guardian for example. Yes, not tanky – a tank. Try killing one of those 1 v 1. Takes ages.

Too bad for you its not 1v1. Anytime i see a support type, oh by the way thats what your describing, my entire team turns all guns on them and there gone in seconds if they dont back away. Its not that hard to burn a support type if everyone focus fires on them.

Do you have “Shake it Off”? I know it has a long cool-down but that’s about all we get. Also yeah, charging into a big knot of enemies just plain doesn’t work. Other than that if you want to throw on a shield you can buy 5 seconds with “Block”.

I carry a nice rifle which also has a sweet proc that allows my condition damage to increase on all targets per kill and stacks up to 25 times. Meaning, for each target I kill I get one proc that increases my bleed damage so after 25 kills it’s placing a crazy debuff on everyone I hit. Spam that around and you just put a whole lot of damage multipliers on the opposing force that all your allies can exploit as well. Keep in mind several of the enemy are likely to have weps with a similar proc too which may account for the insane effect damage you are seeing.

For what it’s worth warriors do a STUPID amount of damage with the right rifle (well compared to many other MMOs and their warriors). That’s just how the game and the class were designed in this case friend. Always keep a good rifle or long bow on hand imho. That’s just the way to play it when facing large groups (PvE and PvP for that matter).

The days of heroically charging in and sponging up their damage and laying down slowing effects while a couple healers spam heals on you and the glass cannons buck shots and lay out crazy AoE are gone (well relatively, as applies to this particular game at least). It is what it is. A guardian buddy spec’d the right way never hurts either though.

I melee fine as a warrior in PvP. You can’t play melee like other games thou. Try mixing it up, use longbow as secondary and launch a cripple then do a bullrush then a hit or two before a knockdown etc. Play smart, control your target and they can drop like flies. If you get bleed then cure it, we most certainly have more than one condition cure skill and can trait for more I believe (tho i have no need for more).

Although I agree with this in a general sense, there is the issue of melee vs ranged.

A lot of weapons and skills for a warrior I suppose are melee based and so far it seems that ranged classes or builds are best and melee is a bad idea in comparison.

The assumption is that GW2 only has damage dealer and support builds. We know there isn’t a real dedicated healer class but the guardian is definitely more tanky and can afford to spend more time in close range.

I haven’t played warrior so I can only guess here but I am having a hard time seeing the advantages of melee compared to ranged and I am not doing so well on finding them.

You can’t just rush with a hammer in any battle. You need team-mate support to keep you alive and to use the correct skills to aid you. Meanwhile you might have a huge damage output, you forget about your defense.

No my point is there are no tank’s. You can build to be more defensive. But the role of TANK does not exist in pvp.

Well there is CC as well of course. Thanks for adding that, but in any case there are ranged builds that can do that.

As a general rule I’d say that anything a melee build can do, a ranged can do as well. That seems fair but the difference is that ranged damage is easier and safer as a general rule. So what does melee get in return for having to get up close and take bigger hits…..heavy armour I guess, but as we can tell there is no tanking so that doesn’t go that far.

Dodging and kiting is definitely the way to do it, but you could wonder if it is desirable that all classes must play this way. It kinda goes against the diversity thing. What is the point of heavy armour anyways if you get one shotted anyway?

Charging in a crowd isn’t a good tactic. It’s not even a good tactic when there are a few people involved, as a thief I can murder warriors just by stacking bleeds and kiting with pistols. Only thing I really fear is a warrior with an axe. Obvously there aren no actual tanks in this game as there are no healers either. Stacking survivability stats does not mean you can tank groups of people.

I’m afraid to say that you’re making the wrong approach.

I’m a high survivability specced guardian, but despite this I’d never make the assumption that I can just charge into a huge fray in WvW.

You have to consider that in the melee there are often 10-15, maybe more AoE’s being applied over the area – of course you are going to go down.

As a melee you should be flanking the enemy or picking out the lone guys that are to the side of the main group. Running into the middle without though is just a repeat of charge of the light brigade.

Also as a melee (or any other class for that matter) you should never be attacking the gate. If you’re not on seige you should be firing at enemies on the walls and making sure no-one is trying to charge from behind.

I tried out my Warrior with some PVP last night, and it actually went pretty well. Even though we have a thick steel skin, this is still a game where you have to play like you’re a glass cannon. When I would see a big group fighting, I’d stay to the side with my rifle and blast people from afar. By the time one would notice me and run over, they’d be worn down enough for me to whip out my dual axes and go to town.

If I encountered a single enemy player, I’d shoot them with the Vulnerability shot, then Cripple shot to keep them from running away effectively. Then, swap to dual axes. Sure, my offensive Warrior is frail, but her damage outpaces so well in 1v1 that it’s not a big issue.

Of course, when facing multiple players on even footing, it’s not so pretty… But then again, 2-3 v 1 is never something you should see as being great odds anyway. She does her job very well, and every build has its weakness.

Hoopa doopa.

Warriors have 3 condition removal abilities (listed above, and they are awesome compared to what many other classes get), plus i believe there’s s trait you can select that helps you with that (may be wrong on that last point).

Really though, you want to be a melee “tanky” style character? Then learn how things do damage so you can learn what you need to do to mitigate it. Your complaint really sounds like, “I did no research into the game, charged in wearing heavy armor and died, wtf, why isnt this game just like all the other games i have played?”

To be helpful, let me repeat, you have 3 of the better condition removal abilities in the game, one tied to your main heal by default even. If you do pvp as any class without the ability to remove conditions, you are asking to die.
