Q:
Hi All!!
I am currently a level 10 Engineer. I have learned 5 skills in Tier 1 which now opens up skills in Tier 2. There are, however, three more skills left in Tier 1. Should I learn all the skills in Tier 1 before getting any in Tier 2 or is it a matter of personal preference?
Thanks!

It’s a matter of personal preference. Eventually, you will earn enough skill points to buy all the skills in the tree, so you don’t need to worry about “getting the right ones.” Just get the ones you think will be useful to you first, then you can fill in the other skills later on.
i did the same first leveing my main. i got the skills i wanted the most. though you’ll need the 5 to unlock the next tier iirc. eventually i started just unlocking all the rest after i got all the skills that i was interested in (who knows! you may fall in love with a skill you’d never thought you’d enjoy ; )).
though i’ll make a short mention here, if you’re planning on going for a legendary or crafting other exotics, you’ll actually need skillpoints to purcahse stuff from Miyani (NPC) near the Mystic Forge in Lion’s Arch. so maybe that’s something you want to keep in mind as well.
No because there are far better kits and turrets in the following tiers that you are better off saving those skill points for .

Thank you all for the responses! I think what I will do is play it safe and be conservative with spending my skill points, at least until I know what I am getting!
I had a thought… isn’t it true that in PVP your character automatically turns to level 80 and therefore would have all the skills available for me to practice first?
I think in sPvP all your skills are unlocked, yes. You DON’T automatically get all skills unlocked in WvW. (Think of WvW as PvE, but with hostile players who are trying to kill you.)
You can go to the Heart of the Mists and be temporarily boosted to level 80, and practice all the skills on training dummies, without actually entering a PvP match, if you like.

Argh! I didn’t know this!!
I just finished ‘buying’ all my skills, (many I didn’t want or need …) cos I didn’t know what else to do with the points ….

It’s cool. if you complete 100% map, you’ll get an additional 202 skill points, also in addition to the skill points you get past 80 for each level up. Tbh unless you buy eldritch scrolls all the time, you won’t run out of skill points for all your skills. and some skills are not really useful in pve imo.

Wow that’s nice! Thanks

Do realize not all skills are available in structured PvP, some are specific to species I believe and those are left out. Also, if you intend on running dungeons at level 80 expect to get a huge amount of skillpoints. I have all skills unlocked on my warrior, I have even used 50 to make a mystic weapon and I currently have nearly 150 skillpoints to spare. You can basically spend them at will.

don’t worry, Bri. i did the same, and only had one or two skills left “unbought”. given one is a thirty. throughout farming / going for map completion / crafting, you’ll make back all your points in no-time! that being said, i see where you’re coming from :///
For the moment I’m only buying enough skills to unlock the next tier, so that when I’m a higher level and start seriously thinking about builds (at the moment I can get away with doing whatever seems fun) I have all my options open and don’t have to go through the hassle of unlocking skills I need. But I plan to buy all the skills eventually.
One thing I really like about this game (and GW1) is that you have so much flexibility with your build. I’ve wasted so much time in single player RPGs having to restart my whole character because I picked skills that sounded good on paper but didn’t really work out.
175 (Human/Sylvari), 178 (Asura/Charr), or 182 (Norn) skill points are needed to max everything.
You earn 202 from completing all the skill points on every PvE and WvW map, as mentioned above. You don’t have to complete the maps, just run to the skill points (which are visible without exposing the map). This is on top of the ones you earn by levelling up. You earn another skill point for each 254,000 experience earned after level 80.
It costs 200 skill points for a Bloodstone Shard, which is used only for legendary weapons. It costs 50 skill points for an Eldrich Scroll, which can be used to “craft” several exotic weapons (at least one of each type). There are a few other uses for skill points, but you can look those up.
With ample play, you can easily learn every skill, make 2 or 3 Eldrich Scroll weapons, and still have many skill points left over.

This is what bugges me a lil bit bout legendary weapons. A legendary weapon should be imo the proof of the dedication you have as a player and also tells a lil bit bout the gaming skills one has. But by using skillpoints as currency for this you end up with people running around with mediocre skillbars cause they want a legendary. I am going for the legendary weapon, but I first made sure I have all skills unlocked.

I am new to the game so forgive my ignorance on this one..
When you say 200 skill points are used for legendary weapons do you mean that in order to learn to equip 1 specific weapon (eg. Bloodstone Shard) you have to use 200 skill points? Or is it more general in that you need 200 skill points to learn to use any legendary weapon?
(A quick explanation about legendary weapons, what they are, how to use them, etc. would be greatly appreciated!)
In the last mmorpg that I played scrolls were consumable. You buy one, it goes in your inventory, and when you consume it it’s gone. No skills required (although there can be level requirements to use a particular scroll).
This Eldrich Scroll, is it like a skill that you learn one time (at a cost of 50 skill points) then you can use over and over? I certainly hope it doesn’t cost 50 skill points to use one time then it’s gone.
Thanks!
You have to trade 200 skill points to NPCs in order to get the precusor items for a legendary weapon, so in that sense yes you have to spend 200 skill points to get 1 weapon, but you’re not unlocking anything, you’re using them like a currency.
If you make a weapon, sell or destroy it and then decide to make another identical one you’ll have to spend another 200 skill points. But alternatively you could buy the weapon or the precusors (I’m not sure if the weapons are soulbound) and use it without spending any skill points.
Same with the Scrolls. It’s not a skill you learn, it’s an item you use in the Mystic Forge and to get it you have to trade skill points to an NPC.

So it costs 50 skill points to use this scroll 1 time and it’s gone? Wow, it had better do something good!

An example for the mystic weapons, which can be crafted at the Mystic Forge and use the scroll in the crafting process:
To get the Mystic Staff, you put the following stuff into the Mystic Forge:
30 Mystic Coins
1 Eldritch Scroll
5 Ancient Staff Shaft
5 Ancient Staff Head
-> Results in one Mystic Staff
