Hi guys, I play a Mesmer. And I asking you guys from a PvE and WvW perspective if I should level another class. I’ve already got full exotics on my main, and I’ve tried leveling other classes and even though I enjoy them (particularly the theif and guardian), I just am not sure I can see myself leveling to 80 or devoting half the time I spend on my Memser (been playing this class for years in the first game). I’m just worried the mechanics of it might change or be nerfed, and once again this is from mostly a PvE perspective. Should I level another class? I get this is a personal decision but I’d like to see if anyone else had a tough time deciding. I have tons of friends who level tons of toons but never really master one. But then again, if one gets nerfed they have something to fall back in. Besides, I don’t feel like getting map completion all over again, but I’m OCD and feel constantly compelled to get every vista, point of interest, etc. over again. But what’s the point of wasting time in other characters when I just get more armor sets on my main and focu in achievements. . . Decisions, decisions. Then again, playing a different toon now and then gives the game a variation of pace.

From a PvE perspective, yes. Not because Mesmers might be nerfed in the future, but because they’re very weak in PvE. If you want to be viable in PvE, don’t play Mesmer.

They’re very nice in WvW/PvP though (players are easily fooled by illusions), but you might wanna have a 2nd character with a different profession incase they get nerfed.

IT’S A SWORD. THEY’RE NOT MEANT TO BE SAFE.

I like to have multiple characters, all different classes. In my case, it’s because I get bored playing the same thing all the time.

Found pottering around on Desolation (EU).
lunawisp was my peacebringer on City of Heroes – she lives on in memory as my gaming id.

I’m also that type of person – level one character, play one character! I mean I do have a thief and a warrior both at lvl 12 but I won’t advance them further.

Don’t worry about nerfs, play what you enjoy playing, Anet will never nerf a profession to the point where it’s completely unviable, and to be honest they can’t really nerf mesmer aside from nerfing its damage a little (doubt it will happen).

And yes I’m a Mesmer too :P

You do not have to spend half the time on your other character. You can split up the time the way you want to and if you have so much fun on mesmer you could even split it up more like 75/25. However, while mesmer might be weak in PvE compared to other professions, having fun is more important in my opinion. We have a mesmer in our group every now and then and we still manage to complete runs. Specially someone who masters a profession really well will always be good to have around. What is best depends on your opinion about what is best, to me having fun is a very deciding factor. Some get fun out of playing a certain profession that they love (like you) while others will change with each buff/nerf hammer that comes around.

GW2 is a game, like the first guildwars, that supports and encourages multiple characters. It’s so quick to have your character at the top plateau of level and gear.

And in terms of crafting, for example, it’s simpler to have 4 characters with 2 crafts each, than to have 1 character master all the crafts.

You do not know how much fun another class is until you play it!

Started off Guardian, then Engineer, and having more fun with a Ranger on the PvE side of things at the moment.

From a PvE perspective you want to have as many level 80s as possible that way when your friends are doing a dungeon and are wanting a specific class for one reason or another you can pop on over and help out in a flash . Who knows you may even find a new main doing it .

I don’t think my main will ever be replaced, but I’ve made several new characters and got bored of leveling them…

Until I decided NOT to stop and do all hearts, vistas etc and just concentrate on the story. I found this meant I could play my new alt for hours without before bored. Honestly, try it – skip all the distractions.

Problem is if you focus on the story. You end up being under leveled and not able to progress.

That is true. However, I do not mean avoid the vistas and events like the plague, by all means take part/ do dynamic events if they are next to you. The problem with doing ALL hearts and vistas in the area for the 2nd (or more) time is that you’ve already ‘been there, done that’ with your main and it is really the uninteresting part. By focusing on more on the story, you will actually get more enjoyment out of it (the story) and it doesn’t feel like a chore.

What he said… I got my warrior to 80 and I’m trying to complete everything on him but on my other characters I’m just playing them without thinking about completing things… Just doing my story, exploring, doing dynamic events as I run by them… basically just playing the game without thinking about a clear cut goal (other than the story). It makes me alts a refreshing change of pace. The only reason I’m leveling alts at all is so that I’ll have multiple classes to have fun with.. sometimes you feel like a warrior, sometimes you don’t :-P

Slow down and smell the pixels.

I would like to point out that Mesmer’s aren’t weak in PvE. It’s just most Mesmer’s don’t spec for dps. With my current gear I can hit anywhere from 1.5-3k on an auto attack, and burst mind wrack combined with blurred frenzy for well over 10k damage.

But I think I’ll try leveling another profession. It could be fun.
