Hi all,

I’m not entirely new to MMOs – I’ve played a few in the past such as SWTOR, but never played long enough to max a character.

I was wondering for gw2 if I should find a character build online that I like and try to stick with it, or if I should just play and level and pick perks as I see fit.

I’m not planning on doing too much PvP, mostly just want to play through the story. I would like a character that would at least be capable of doing PvP without getting crushed though.

Thanks!

With the yesterday’s update you can change your traits (“perks”) without costs and on the fly (out of combat of course), so you can try any build you want, if you don’t like just change it, that makes you know a lot more about your class while you level. When you reach lvl 80 and if you aren’t satisfied with your build you can look at the class sub forums and search for a build that fits you.

Bardy Belzebuson – Ranger Sir Belzebu – Herald
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)

Personally I’d say just pick what you like, experiment and make your own build over time. But then I’ve always preferred to do that in any game, even if it’s harder to get a good one I find it more fun than copying someone elses build.

Other people will probably disagree. But PvE in this game is easy enough that you don’t need a perfect build to succeed so there’s a lot more room to learn through trial and error.

Since armor repair and retraiting is free now and you retrait while out playing, experiment with the traits, try different levels of damage, healing and toughness till you find what is best for you.

Even if you got some build from someone, that doesn’t mean it would be the right build for you.

Don’t tell him “no cost” because as a new player he is going to have to EARN every Major trait skill (or buy them). Changing them for free at any time (non-combat) is a great change, but new players are going to have to work a bit for the trait skills to make the builds veteran players take for granted.

Don’t get me wrong, I think the change is awesome and am considering starting a new character myself to test out the system in full (I have an open character slot).

Well, when I said no cost, I was specifically referring to retraiting, as there is no cost to changing the traits that you currently have.

But good point on having to buy them.
