Small wooden chests
I had one the other night, they are difficult to see.
I hadn’t seen a small wooden chest drop for me for several weeks, or more closely to nearly 2 months. That is, until 2 days ago when I killed something, looted it and went to walk away when I zoomed my camera out one step and was surprised to see one floating in the air well above my character’s head above where I killed the beast. I was unable to loot it at first, due to its height, but luckily I killed it near to a rock facing and was able to get some height and barely reach it to loot it. Had a masterwork glove in it if I recall correctly.
Otherwise, yes, in my experiences and compared to how frequently they used to drop, I think they have been intentionally and severely limited in drop rate to the point of being almost entirely removed from dropping at all. :\

You SHOULD be seeing the chests less frequently after the Feb 26 patch. The condition for them showing up changed. They used to show up for everything that was Masterwork or above(and then some due to a bug). Now they only show up for Rare or above(although the bug still seems to be around, just less frequent. I got a porous bone from a wooden chest a while ago).
I usually don’t even notice the chests since I pay attention to the <Search> thing rather than looking around for hard to see objects(brown chest on dirt >_<).
I came on here to find out if the drop rate on these had been vastly lowered. I thought that greens could drop from them also, but maybe not. The wiki does say “up to rare quality.”
It had been maybe 6 weeks since I saw a wooden chest, but last night I noticed one drop from a trash mob, containing a rare. This makes me wonder how many wooden chests I have missed! I don’t know what “<search> thing” Khisanth is referring to, except maybe pressing Ctrl. If there’s some easy way to routinely notice them more easily I’d really like to know!

Greens USED to drop from them. That hasn’t been the case for nearly a month(it’ll be a month tomorrow).
The <search> thing I am referring to is the yellow UI that pops up when your character is next to an interactive object such as a chest or a lootable corpse. If you are next to an NPC you can talk to it’s green with the word “Greet”, if it’s an ore node it’s blue with “Mine”, if its a tree it’s brown with “Chop”, etc. I think you get the idea.
If they are still dropping I may not be seeing them.As stated in op, I actively had to scroll in and out my camera view to see them before. With the amount of culling that has been happening in pve since the last patch they may not be showing up at all which makes it even worse.
When the wooden chest spawn then also include that cloudy/fuzzy effect you see used when objects(the bane of condition characters) respawn in the world. As far as I know no culling occurs with these chest because the server doesn’t actually have to do any work to determine who to show the chest to. On the client side they should be one of the cheapest things to render.
I press [F] so often during combat, I doubt I’d notice if any of the chests were dropping (or not).
Greetings,
All I do is hold the Control key down after killing the mobs, shows up plain as day
I do wish there was a way to have the text of a wooden chest or all the stuff on ground to always show.
They shouldn’t be brown for one thing, it makes them too easily missed. The few I have seen have been underwater where they are more visible. They should be a different, non ground color such as blue or purple or they should add sparkles to them. If I am getting these things on land then I am missing them.
Unfortunately there is some choosing as to who sees the chests or not. Just this evening my wife told me there was a chest at my feet. I couldn’t see it on my computer and she could on hers.
To remove hardware excuses I will say I run a GTX680 SLI rig and she runs a 2 year old laptop, where she gets 30fps on medium, I get 130 on max settings.
Somewhere something is wrong and the fact that this was moved from Bug section to players helping players is ridiculous. Just another sad showing on Anets customer service/tech support.

The chests do appear for some people in a group but not for others. I had a guildie say there was a chest on the ground. Went over and checked and could never see it. I have to assume it wasn’t mine since an option to open never appeared, but this is rather annoying.
@ WyldCFH: I think the confusion here involves the fact that when one of these chests drop, it’s essentially the same as a monster drop. It’s only yours and only you can see it.
I haven’t paid much attention to them since I usually pick up stuff before the monster’s body disappears (hence making the chest easily visible), but rares do still seem to be dropping in them. And that’s not just equipment, but also rare mats.

I got one 2 days ago in WvW, with absolutely nothing inside.

I got 2 chests in the last couple of weeks, each had a rare in it. So they are still out there… But I still don’t get why they did this. If anything, you might miss your loot because the chests are harder to notice. Oh..

I agree, the system is choosing who sees what.
And any time something has to be drawn to screen there is a chance of it being culled. My original post was for someone that actually works on the game to note a possible problem since I went from getting 1-2 chest/day to 0 chests in a month with the Feb patch.
Seems the forum mods/CS thinks dealing with bug inducing patches lies in the realm of the player though.

The case where my guildie called attention to a chest, it was because it wasn’t hers either. She saw it, couldn’t open it. Called me and the other party member over. The other party member saw but couldn’t open it. I could neither see nor open it. Possibly it belonged to someone in the same area that killed something, never saw the chest, and left.
