I’m a fairly new player and this is my first patch. I do not understand the trait points now.

I was told I get one every 5 level but anther is telling me I can get some by doing events? What events? Can I do them at my current level? (38)

scroll down to the trait system overhaul part
Basically, you only get 14 trait points total now, as opposed to 70: each point costs five of the old ones. Since you’re still leveling, you might have less trait points now compared to the previous system.
As for unlocking the traits themselves, I can’t tell you exactly since I don’t have any characters to level up, but the way I’m reading it you have to complete specific areas of the game to unlock specific traits. For the grandmaster traits at least (level 80, third tier) you have to complete endgame type content to unlock. Adept tier traits you will probably have to beat a story mode dungeon or something, there should be stuff for you to unlock at your level.

In the traits window you can click on a trait line to see the list of traits for that line. If a trait is locked there is a telescope icon that you can hover over to see how you can unlock it. Clicking on it will show you were to go. You can also just buy the manual from a trainer instead.

So all of my trait points that I had acquired before the patch are all erased?

I’m just not understanding where exactly all of them have gone since i had around 18 of them.

Compressed. You should have either 3 or 4 now.

Ah it’s actually covered in the blog post. Glossed over since it wasn’t relevant to me.

You’ll start acquiring points at level 30, when the adept trait tier is unlocked, then you’ll earn one trait point every six levels until level 66, when you’ll start earning two trait points at a time.

At 38 that should still be a total of 2 trait points.

OP is confusing trait points and trait skills (nomenclature is rather confusing as we also have normal and elite skills involved….)

  • Trait points are what you use to open up the trait skill slots (every 5 is a SET minor trait skill and every 10 you get to pick from a number of MAJOR trait skills). Also, trait points have been combined from the previous maximum of 70 to 14 (divided by 5).

Trait points are no longer assigned linearly like before and here is the progression (per the release notes):
Level 30—1 Trait Point
Level 36—1 Trait Point
Level 42—1 Trait Point
Level 48—1 Trait Point
Level 54—1 Trait Point
Level 60—1 Trait Point
Level 66—2 Trait Points
Level 72—2 Trait Points
Level 78—2 Trait Points
Level 80—2 Trait Points

Points are now available a bit later with more points becoming available once the highest tier of traits is opened at Level 60.

  • MAJOR trait skills are what you will need to earn or buy.

Trait skills?
That sounds even more confusing because I don’t think anything has ever referred to them as that. It is just traits and trait points.

You may be right. That’s what I’ve always called them (my bad).

While I think the change is a good one, I can understand that someone with characters below 80 feel they are getting “shafted” by the change (the farther below 80 the worse it seems). I “like” the idea of hunting down traits as part of character development, but many users just want to get to 80 ASAP and with the least work possible. I get that this changes makes that more difficult (and expensive if they are not actually “playing” the game to reach 80).

Yeah, several of my alts are level 30 now, had plenty of traits unlocked and points distributed where I was happy with them and now I have to start over. This part sucked as I forgot what they were set at. But I guess when they finally get to be level 80 and I can play the game I can start experimenting with them to see what I like…

I hate the level system of MMO’s it’s completely outdated, especially when the game is tailored for max level anyway. “It’s to teach new players how to play a game” – the real world has this thing called trial and error, you touch the stove as a child and find out what “NO! It’s HOT” means because until you touch it, you have no idea why you’re being yelled at. Anyway, if this game actually had a tutorial it wouldn’t need the leveling system. Whatever, stupid trait update.

I don’t know about the lower tier traits but grandmaster trait unlocks seems poorly designed. For example there is the one that requires fighting the karka queen but that event only runs 3 times a day. Then there are the Orr temple ones but that requires the defense events to fail first.

Skill hunting in GW1 that this was supposed to mimic didn’t have those problems since you can start a mission at any time.
