Hey guys,

I’m a “returning” player. Guild wars 1 was.. no is my favorite game on the PC ever. I recently bought for the 4th time Guild wars 1 on steam but was sad that no one seems to play it anymore, so my friends and I decided to give Guild wars 2 a try.

Now i remember HATING this game when it initially came out. Everything that was great and unique in GW1 was stripped out in the sequel so i orignally played it when it came out for about 2 weeks and tossed it away.

With that said …. I swore that i would never come back to this game again …. so I bought the 99$ GW2 expension that comes with a bunch of stuff ,… (Hey .. i never said i was the smartest player neither)

But in all honesty, im glad i gave this game a 2nd try. Once I stepped on my EGO and realize this isn’t anything like GW1 , i think i’ll be able ot enjoy the game.

So basically, i’m a new player with 4000 or 5000 gems coming soon …. I saw that gems are used for in game benefits so i was hoping i could get some advice on what to get first ? What are the must have upgrades ?

I hear that there are missions that you need to buy in the end game with gems ? If that’s the case should i just hang on to them?

Thanks!

Living Story seasons (the bits that bridge and set up expansions) are available for gems. Going forward, they can be free for you as long as you log in during each chapter’s launch period (eg if you log in now, season 3, episode 3 is free and yours forever, but you need to pay for episodes 1 and 2).

I would prioritise season 2 and the early bit of season 3 for your gems (season 1 no longer exists due to various reasons). Infinite gathering tools are prob your best convenience item from the gemstore.

The only time you have to buy living story with gems is if you did not at least log in once while each episode is active. If you log in when they are active you get them for free. So if you did indeed miss all or parts of LS2 and parts of LS3 by not logging in you can by them with gems to play them. However, you can party with someone that has them if you just want to do it for the story. You won’t earn any of the achievements that way though. It is worth noting that completing achievements with LS2 and 3 award mastery points which you may very much want to earn to advance your various mastery unlocks.

As for good items to by with gems here is a thread on the topic from just the other day. Sorry, I’m feeling too lazy to list a bunch because I agree with most suggested in the other thread.

My suggestion would be this ordering:

  • Living Story episodes – season 3, then season 2 – as they are fun, and worth owning.
    * Extra bank slots
    * 1 or 3 material storage expansions, if you wish to hold large volumes. not worth going above 3, probably not worth above 1, in practical terms
    * extra character slots, if desparate for them
    * silver perma-salvage-kit
    * bronze perma-salvage-kit
    * perma-gathering-tools
    * extra shared inventory slots
