Specializations - which to play?

Hey friends. I’ve been playing for a little under two years now and I’m dying to try a new profession. Unfortunately, the insta-level 80 silverwastes boost doesn’t let me try specializations, which I know affect classes pretty heavily in the end, so I’m having a hard time picturing what the final result of leveling will be and would love some input. I currently play mostly PvE with a bit of WvW thrown in (sea of sorrows server, so it’s an itty-bitty zerg if that matters). No PvP or raiding for now, so it’s very much okay if the class is in low demand for those areas.

I currently play tempest, daredevil, and chronomancer. Tempest (main) and daredevil are very fun and I enjoy the fast pace, damage output potential, and maneuverability. No complaints with either class, I’d just like to try something new and different than the glass cannon I have set up on both characters. Chronomancer might have been a little too different for me, however, and I’m finding the combination of high survivability and low personal damage a bit too slow and frustrating. (Entirely my fault, I should have predicted that switching to the exact opposite playstyle wouldn’t work for me.)

I’d love to try something with middle of the road survivability and damage that allows me to try and solo some higher level content/WvW a bit more effectively. Something that doesn’t immediately get downed if a champ (or opposing zerg member) catches me and gets a hit or two in, but where I still feel like I’m doing enough damage to keep my sanity. If it has a moderate speed playstyle, ranged attack options, or a speed boost skill, that’s a definite plus. I’m cool with steep learning curves and I don’t mind if I end up dying a lot while learning the ropes. (I do understand that I’m going to be exchanging some dps for some survivability. I promise I’m not expecting sky-high damage output and bomb-proof damage absorbing capabilities.)

If you guys have any suggestions or recommendations for me, I’d absolutely love to hear them. (And if you want to spell out why you love those options as well, that’d be appreciated even more!) I have another 2-3 character slots that are just kind of sitting around, so I’m more than willing to try out a few different professions to see how they feel/fit. Thanks so much in advance for your input, I really appreciate it.

I’d say either Herald or Necro fit your style the best. They both have decent sustain (Herald has heavy armor and dodges/blocks, Necro has a huge healthpool and minions) and do reasonable damage. For herald, power builds are most common, so it will feel similar to daredevil. They are amazing for any kind of PvP (i.e. WvW included) and pretty versatile. Necros are usually played as condi, so you will have some ramp up time => killing trash mobs slowly, but they are very good for taking down champions, especially when they have high toughness (high level fractals).

Engineer. It’s a class that really is what you make of it. Many different playstyles, lots of options. You can have a lot or very little survivability, a lot of damage or mediocre damage, no support or lots of support. And scrapper adds a melee option to the class, along with, yet more options.

Edit: or anything in between. It’s not all or nothing lol
