I own gw2, but never got very far in it. The new expansion coming out actually looks really good though so I want to play again, but I’m just wondering if it’d be worth starting now and risk getting too bored with the game or should I wait for the expac. One of the most interesting points of the new expac is the new class, but I don’t know if there is any reason I would want or need a high level character similar to the death knight in wow.

Sure, start now. There’s enough content to last you several months, even if you power through stuff (which, I don’t recommend). Plus, there have been a number of recent 75%-off sales, so there’s likely to be another one soon. Pick it up, give it a try (including some time to get used to a new way of thinking about MMOs, especially if you are used to WoW). If you love it, great. If not, you only dropped US$10 or so to find out.

I say start now. If you get bored before the expansion is released, you could save money by not buying it. Why would you, if you’re bored of the game? Plus, you already own the game, so you have no reason to wait.

Plus, isn’t the expansion mainly for high-level players? Are there anything for us low-level players to enjoy? (other than the new class.)

There will be new things in the old areas, and new systems, but going into the expansion maps will be for 80’s. I’d say it’s worth getting an alt to 80 to be ready for that, so long as you enjoy the process.

Well, if you start now and get bored, then you can take a break until the expansion. You’ll have something accomplished before the launch vs. starting from scratch.

Sure, start now. The expansion is not going to destroy anything you accomplish now, level 80 will still be maximum level afterwards. Also if you have a level 80 character and do about 60 skill challenges you can get every specialization on that character — including the elite one.

I think it would make more sense to start now.

For one thing the expansion is going to cost real money and there’s no sense spending the extra on a game you don’t enjoy playing. Much better to make use of the base game (which you’ve already got) to enable you to make an informed decision when the expansion comes out.

But also as other people have said the expansion is mainly focused on level 80 content, so if you wait to start playing when it comes out it will be that much longer before you get to see most of it.

Start now.

When the expansion starts, everyone will get points they can put in the Tyrian Mastery lines. These points depend on how much content you have done in the game. If you start now you can get more points for later use.

You still will need to play in the old maps in order to use these points. The mastery lines need to be “trained” (do more content which make them progress) until you get to places where you can slot in the mastery points, but at least you will have points to put in the slots.
