Hey guys! So my friend and I want to start a guild. My friend is a very experienced player and I’ve been playing for a little while now. We have been trying to start our guild up but with little success. Is it really possible to start a new guild in 2017? Does anyone have any tips that can help us? We are feeling discouraged and could use some help. Thank you in advance!

Starting a guild is hard; running a guild is harder. Make sure it’s what the two of your really want and be clear to yourselves about your goals. Do you want a tiny guild with just close friends? A small guild with a group that enjoys doing stuff together? A guild focused on a certain type of gaming (e.g. WvW havoc or Fractals or …)?

Also ask yourselves whether you might be able to get the same warm fuzzies from joining an established guild.

Once your clear on your goals, you can put together a plan for how to make it happen. For example, if you want a fractal group, you can recruit by PUGging until you find like-minded players. Or if open world PvE is your thing, run hero point trains or lore-tours and (a few) people will ask if you have a guild.

Good luck.

Like Illconceived said starting a new guild is hard any time.

My number one tip would be to think about what you can offer players – why should they join your guild instead of any of the others recruiting?

If your answer is that you’re a small friendly guild with active, helpful players who do a bit of everything in-game then that’s your problem. Not that there’s anything wrong with that but there are thousands of identical sounding guilds in the game and nothing to make yours stand out.

I just joined a new start-up guild a few months ago and it is going well so if starting a new guild is something that you are excited about and really want to try, then you should go for it. However, you really need to be prepared for a few things like……

- You will need to spend a lot of effort recruiting people because the community is not as active as it once was and people are typically looking for guilds that can help them with stuff like raids rather than new, start-up guilds.
- Up-grading a guild hall is very expensive, and much of the cost and effort will fall on your shoulders as the guild leader. How deep are your pockets?
- You will need to be in-game a lot to rep the guild, to help people, and to create an environment that “feels” active. People will often bail on a guild that “feels” dead or dying.
- You are up against a lot of competition. There are always new guilds popping-up (or old guilds restructuring) that are trying to recruit those new players joining the game.

……anyways, best of luck whatever you decide.
