Starting GW2 tonight
Well, it is fairly easy to level to 15 to 20, and by then, you will have a pretty good idea how the class plays out. You have 5 slots, so feel free to experiment. Remember, getting to level 80 is not the point of the game (which is fairly easy to get to). Spend time experimenting. If you want to see how your class fare at end-game level 80, visit The Mist and you can experiment to your heart’s content.
Welcome even if your interests are totally opposite to mine: Nothing is getting me to PvP.
There are no race/profession restrictions. Others will be able to give you PvP advice, but in general you can try the professions easily. Every PvP character is automatically lvl 80 so you’ll have all the skills and traits at your disposal there. It may waste a little of your time to try them, but not much since you don’t need to level for it.
Well, the Thief should definitely fulfill your desire for a rogue-type class.
As for an affliction lock, sorry nothing like that in GW2. But the Necro profession does deal & manage conditions better than any other in the game. And GW2’s Ele is quite diverse and may offer some fun mage-style play for you. Also, check out the Mesmer. It’s very different than it was in GW1 and is a caster with some pretty unique abilities.

I’m starting GW2 tonight, bought it yesterday afternoon but it’s taken more than a day to actually install so I will be playing it when I get home from work today. I’m a PvP orientated player and played Rogue, Shadow Priest & Warlock in RBGs on WoW at a decent level and played a Mage in RIFT. My class preference is definitely Rogue and Warlock therefore when it comes to GW2 naturally I’m looking at a choice of Thief or Necro. Unfortunately I’ve been advised Necro is so painfully far from the feel of an Affliction Warlock that it’s not worth playing, can anyone advise what my best option is to not waste time playing the wrong profession? Also are there any race/prof restrictions? I only have minimal GW1 exp.
Been high rated in S1 (2550 highest) when i cared about arena and played Lock for 7 years. If you want feel free to hit me in-game in around 4 hours. Can provide you with answers to what you seek, need and current state of things.
PS
Condition necro and condition engineer are closest things to Affliction Lock IMO. Difference is Engie comes with the mobility Lock never had

The art for Mesmer looks amazing, it seems like more a support prof though? Will definitely speak to you in-game later Killyox
I played a lock in wow as my main, im now playing a Mesmer and it is a fantastic class, very fun and high damage but nothing at all like a warlock, more shaman if anything i would say. Worth checking out though as im having great fun leveling it up

Friend had the same enthusiasm as you do. Now at 80 and after 100% map etc he curses left and right for playing mesmer in pve :>
In PvP mesmers are still too one dimensional with shatter spec
start a character, go into PvP (heart of the mists). As soon as you are through the “tutorial” instance you can do this anytime by clicking the icon at the top of your screen.
In here you will be max level with all traits and skills unlocked. You can use steady weapons to build craft and change your armor / weapons / accessories at any time for no cost.
This is an excellent place to get a feel for a class before you spend time leveling it.

Go ahead and try out a Necro though, Kari. Its a good class no matter what anyone tells you. My condition specc’d wellomancer Necro is quite handy in wvw and in pve. I solo’d her to 80 with no problems.
Can’t speak spvp though.

Since you were PvP oriented in WoW, and you played some of the stronger PvP classes in the game I think you’re looking for the strong classes in PvP in GW2. Go thief and mesmer and enjoy the easy badges. A mesmer in the hands of a skilled player is one of the strongest classes in the game IMO. Not to mention I think the mesmer is one of the more interesting profession designs.

Mesmer is definitely not a support class. It’s not straight-forward like warrior (hack, slash, shoot) but it can deal some pretty fantastic damage. It has probably the best Elite in the game (party-wide buff) and can be a beast in PvP. Tougher to master than most classes, don’t underestimate Mesmer.
