I have requested my friend to start playing at the same time as me so we can enjoy and share our first impressions tomorrow over Skype

Quick question: He is planning to play Norn and I much preffer the Charr (I loved them in the original game xD)

Do the starting areas differ and would it be too much of an effort for us to meet up early on? I am just wondering it is not a big problem if this is the case, I will simply start a Norn with him for now and then catch up my Charr character in my spare time if I have to.

The starting areas do differ, but is it not difficult at all to meet up.

When you start up, each character has a small intro.
Once you have completed that you simply need to head to the city near you (for a Charr that is Black Citadel).
On the map should be a purple gate (Asura Gate) that will take you to Lion’s Arch.
Once you are at Lion’s Arch, head to the Hoelbrak Asura Gate (one of the other purple gates around you.)
You will now be in the Norn city. Head East to leave the city and you will be in the Norn starting zone. XD

The only thing you would miss out on is your personal story, which you can go back and do at any point. My first day I was a human elementalist and went to the Norn starting area too.

Just use the asura gates to travel to Norn starting city or have him travel to Charr starting city. There’s no real restriction to keep yall from leveling together, regardless of race.

In your main city, which you can enter as soon as you finished the tutorial mission, there’s a big pink swirly icon on the map… that’s an Asura Gate to Lion’s Arch. It sends you, for free, to the gate hub in LA, where you can then step through another gate into whichever main city you want.

The only thing you have to do in your race’s areas specifically is your respective storyline quests. Apart from that, all areas are open to all.

I can give you directions from the norn starting area:

At level 2 when you arrive in the (unphased) world turn around on the path, walk up the sligh incline, there will be an enormous glowing circle a couple of feet up the path.

Walk through the glowing circle into Hoelbrak.

Press M for Map – you should see a purple symbol on the map. The purple marking will be around the mid-left of the map from where you where you are. That is the asura Gate (it’s called peeta’s gate or something like that). You can get to it by walking through the Trade commons area. There will be npcs to ask for directions if you get lost.

Once you walk through the Asura gate in Hoelbrak it will take you to an area in Lion’s Arch (another city) with other gates to every other major city. One of those gates (the one with Charr standing in front of it) will take you to your friend’s major city.

PS – to find you friend more easily ask them to go through their portal to meet you in the Charr city then you can just look on your map for their dot and follow it to them.

PPS – One of you may have to right click their portrait and choose “join in” if you’re separated onto different overflow shards.
