Being wont to speak my mind in chat, whether public or private, I’m wondering if they’re still banning accounts for cussing in map or other public chats. It seems a bit silly to me that they even did (do?) that, seeing as there’s a language filter that’s on by default.

Yes, I’m asking for permission to be publicly crass. =p

If you say something in the chat in game, whether that’s in public or private, and someone reports you, they’ll investigate. If you’re found to be in breach of the ToS, then you’ll be given a time out.

So no, you don’t get to say whatever you want or be “crass” in chat because the first few weeks of the game are over. The rules still continue to apply.

My advise is to scream at your computer and leave it out of chat. There already enough useless stuff in map chat. We really dont need to see something like that.

The correct way to look at it is through the ToS you sign. If it’s in there that swearing/cussing is against the rules, then the filter is irrelevant. As it stands, the filter is just a safeguard, hence the toggle.

Just keep the crud out of chat to be safe. You can have the ‘dirty’ conversations with the people that you know, such as guildies/friends, who are comfortable with it.

Yeah, be aware of who you’re speaking to. If it’s friends or a dungeon group you’re reasonably comfortable with, say what you like in the knowledge that you wouldn’t expect them to report you. In map chat, don’t. If you are reported, you are likely to get a ban. Be considerate for the randoms who might be listening in

I think it’s pretty ridiculous to have rules against swearing when people can just put on the profanity filter. There should be no rules against swearing. Harassing though, is a different story.

I wish there was a filter for real life. I don’t see any need for adding swear words to common, every day speech, but people do. There’s enough of the garbage in our lives as it is, there’s no need to include it in a place that is meant to be fun.

Plus its better to prevent complaints by banning foul mouthed people than it is to tell other people to harden up.

It is ridiculous to have rules against swearing. They are words just like any other word. In fact they are a useful tool when you want to add emphasis or strength to a statement. It’s the people who choose to be offended by these words who turn them into “bad words”. If people don’t want to see bad language, don’t touch the filter and then you’ll never know the difference if someone typed $(*(&%^& or an actual bad word. It’s your fault for turning off the filter, which is on by default.

Then again, if it’s in the ToS, you’re outta luck =P

They are not really banning people for the odd swear in chat. It is more when these start being directed at other people that it starts to be a problem and bans are handed out. So while trying to keep swearing to a minimum is just polite you should be fine as long as you do not start being abusive.

Personally, I’m glad that Arenanet is holding people accountable for “crass” language. Swearing doesn’t really bother me unless it’s blatantly being overused, but there is no reason to be “crass”. It’s not funny (except to you and your friends, which is completely fine), however in a public chat, it serves no purpose whatsoever. This is all purely my opinion, but I’m glad it’s being handled due to some people’s inability to have a verbal filter.

I completely agree with you. It seems to have become the new trend to push what ever kind of limit possible in chat, especially if someone asks another person to stop. I’m not saying that this is the OP’s problem, but this is a good example of why Anet holds people to the ToS. Opinions aside, if people really think the ToS is stupid in this game, they shouldn’t have agreed to it, and moved on.

As far as I am aware the rules are not against swearing in particular, it’s against being rude to each to other which, more often that not, is done through swearing.

While playing Guild Wars 2, you must respect the rights of others and their rights to play and enjoy the Game. To this end, you may not defraud, harass, threaten, embarrass or cause distress and/or unwanted attention to other players. This includes posting insulting, offensive, or abusive comments about players, repeatedly sending unwanted messages, reporting players maliciously, attacking a player based on race, sexual orientation, religion, heritage, etc. Hate speech is not tolerated.

Is the applicable part of the Rules of Conduct (which are presented in a very easy to read way: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-rules-of-conduct/ )

It’s not hard to refrain from bad language. You agreed to the terms and conditions when you created your account. There’s plenty of places in the real world where you would be punished for swearing openly, so why do people insist on pretending as if it’s unfair or unrealistic for the same rules and regulations to exist online?

I certainly don’t want to see people dropping the ‘f-bomb’ in every other sentence. Not because it offends me, but because…it isn’t needed. There’s plenty of ways to communicate without it.

My opinion there is absolutely no reason for it at all
Don’t get me wrong I curse like a pirate whenever I die but I do it to myself
Actually typing it out for one reason or another is completely not necessary because most people don’t want to hear it

You can always throw your mouse or keyboard or punch a hole in your wall but typing into a public chat is completely unnecessary
You wanna curse to your guild in guild chat or curse to your guild in vent go for it but the world doesnt want to hear it nor cares to

To answer the OP: Yes, they are still banning people for being offensive.

You can swear in public. That’s not why people get banned:

They get banned when the person who was “just swearing” was, in actuality, insulting another person or being offensive.

The occasional swear word, in of itself, is not grounds for being banned. But, calling someone a series of expletives is.

I am very glad ArenaNet is doing this.

I appreciate the rules against swearing. Occasional use is fine, but it’s just annoying when it clutters the chat — even with the filter on. I kinda wish they would substitute “kitten” instead of the dashes because I think that’s funnier and it usually disarms the rest of the comment.

1. There is no banning for swearing. There is banning for insulting others.
2. ArenaNet doesn’t watch your chat all day. They look at your chatlog if someone reports you. Simple logic tells you that the more people can read what you say, the higher the numerical probability that one or more of them report you. Therefor, you are ‘safer’ in party chat, with 4 people, than in map chat, with 400 people.
3. Since insulting language cannot magically be reported before it appears in chat to be visible to all, there is a language filter for people who do not want to risk having their happy fun time ruined by suddenly being confronted with that kind of language. An added safety measure to protect players’ comfort zone is not the same as a free-for-all pass to cuss country.

Common sense, people.

Right-click drag and report. I’ll do it every time I see it. I do run with filters on. But people will spell it kkittenn, k i t t e n, kytten, and whatnot to bypass the filter.

So I suggest, if you’re gonna be salty, get your spelling right. That way you can get the tickly feeling of being a potty mouth and I won’t see it/won’t report.

Thanks to those who cleared up whether it was just swearing that was a bannable offense or if it had to be directed at someone as an insult or otherwise hurtful intention. I probably shouldn’t have used the word “crass” to describe what I was thinking of, as I don’t actually attack people. I’m just colorful in my language at times. Obviously harassment should be bannable, I don’t disagree with that. I do, however, disagree about swearing in general being punishable.

Everyone knows what words are “forbidden” and can lead to a ban. Even those who use them know that very well before they write them. Still they decide to do it. I don’t know why. Maybe because they think it’s cool to write bad words, maybe they want to annoy people, I don’t know. Then they whine about getting a punishment.

There is a simple solution. If you don’t want to get banned, don’t write bad words.
There is absolutely zero reasons to use those. You cannot even say that it was an accident because it is impossible to write anything by accident. Accidents and slips might happen when talking out loud but not in writing.
