Guild Wars 2

Hello!

I had played a bit of GW2 when it first came out, but never ended up with a high level character or got far into the storyline. Right now I am thinking of getting back in the game with release of the expansion and starting with a fresh character, so I have a few questions regarding story and its progression.

First of all, what story content there is currently in the game that I should do prior to starting on HoT stuff? What order should I do it in? Is there any content that is no longer available, but I should familiarize myself with?

Bonus question. I am pretty much settled on wanting to play mesmer as my main. Any suggestions on builds/weapons or general direction to take the character in to make the process of going through story content smoother?

While I do recommend doing the guild wars 2 personal story when you have the time, I don’t think it will be necessary to complete it prior to HoT. Though you might not know some of the returning characters. However I do think it would be a good idea to to catch up on the content of season 1 and 2 of the living story, because those tell the story leading up to the content in HoT.

Season 1 is not available anymore in the game, but there is a small summary on the story if you talk to Magister Ela Makkay (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Magister_Ela_Makkay). Season 2 can still be done, though you might have to buy the missions from the gemstore.
