First off, I not looking for “You just suck at that class” comments.

Alright so I’ve been playing the charr story as a Thief. I understand they are meant to get harder as you get to higher levels, but some things don’t really add up. It feels like stories don’t scale with each class. A warrior class could easily take down a group of three pretty easy. Maybe they’ll have some issues, but they’ll get it down without dying.

A thief however, would have a very hard time due to the fact that their armor is paper and health is weak to boot. This is my current issue. The last few story missions I’ve played ended up with my thief against groups of mobs (Normally three or four that walk together) that would beat it down in the matter of seconds. Each time I’d have to die at least once before the whole group was taken down. This left me with completely broken armor when put against the elite at the end of the mission. I’m not even going to get into how the mobs could care less about any NPC’s helping you; Targeting you as soon as you heal yourself back up or come out of stealth.

Is there something different I should be doing? I’m having a very hard time continuing the story and I really want to build this thief up. Sorry if this just came off as a rant to people. I was just explaining why I need help.

I know how that feels. :p I play a Sylvari Elementalist and I just recently had a painful quest. It was a quest of my level but I would die to the first group of mobs. I went to WvW and leveled up 2 levels and went back, I got to the end and then got massacred again. So I came back with a friend, a couple levels lower than me, and a difficult fight later we actually beat it. But I must have tried to beat it by myself at least 20+ times.
Sorry this isn’t really helpful but it felt good to rant about it. xD

My advice, level up a few levels and try again. :)

Even as a Warrior I found myself dying often in the class quests because they bombard you with mobs. The only thing to do is make sure you’re gear is up to snuff and don’t attempt it until you’re a few levels higher than recommended.

As an elementalist I think some are way to hard. I am at main 73 and after lvl60 main (or so) its more easy.

Tbh the personal story quests do feel a bit out off balance with the amount off mobs we get bombarded, especially the squishy classes, and if you are doing them as soon as you hit the level recommended for it. I have started doing those in group with a friend and all i can say they are running much smoother in team (plus since he plays different race i get to see his story line and he gets to see mine ;D).

Agree, I tried ‘breaking the blade’ with my human thief and was wiped 4 times. I even tried it with a mesmer friend and got wiped (but we could finish it finally from the re-spawn point). The NPC died at the first boss so no way to get rid of the aggro.
(It’s a level 10 quest, so it shouldn’t have a very high skill cap being in the beginner levels). I don’t know how other classes did in this quest.
Personally I think this quest should have a bit of nerving
(or at least have Logan come out of hiding when I’m dying at his feet )
(edit: why do my spoiler tags not work?)

Some thought provoking quote

I also feel that maybe some of the story quests need a bit of re-tweaking.. I just did one on my mesmer in which it took me nearly 45 minutes due to many downed states and deaths. In the first couple ‘phases’, I counted close to 15 mobs on screen, most of which would attack me instead of the npcs. It took me some time to get them down because my abilities were barely hitting for anything and my clones dying near immediately. I even tried switching weapon sets twice and nothing really seemed to help. My gear is pretty good also, but being a cloth wearer, I was going down in about 2-3 hits, even with dodging and such. The ranged was killing me, on top of the multiple melee mobs. Eventually the next part summons 4 elementals and a grawl, and each elemental took forever to kill, as did the grawl. I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong or what, but it does seem a bit much. I don’t claim to be the best player or the worst, still getting used to the game, but.. I had another situation similar on my ranger where I had to die about 10 times to get the quest done.

IMHO, that’s not really challenge, it’s just silly. Forcing you to die to complete a story quest isn’t good design, it’s a waste of time. I’m sure people will argue that and say ‘L2P’, but whatever.

Tl;DR – I agree that some story quests may need to be tweaked just a tad, as I had issues as well with several professions.

PyPaws:
So what i have been doing on my human thief (high 40’s) quests is using the AoE stealth ability, the smoke bomb ability, and the summon thieves one. I use DW daggers with a bit of condition damage, i just use my bleeds to kill them with the death blossom while kiting. Use the Aoe cloak when you are close to death and your heal is on CD and summon your thief friends (they can be summoned from stealth and it wont break it). Stand in the stealth field and you can stay stealthed for 10 seconds while you bleeds work away at the mobs and so do your summoned thief minions.

Sorry i don’t remember the names of the abilities, but i have been able to solo all my class quests as a human thief choosing the order of wispers (or whatever they are called) and they start throwing a ton of mobs (5+ sometimes) at you.
